The sale of imitation samurai swords could be banned by the end of the year, the Home Office announced today.
Importing or hiring the weapons could also be made illegal following a string of samurai sword attacks in recent years.
Breaching the ban, which is targeted at cheap imitation samurai swords rather than the more expensive genuine collectors' items made by licensed swordsmiths in Japan, would result in up to six months in jail and a £5,000 fine.
So that means you can decapitate someone with a genuine sword but not an imitation. The mind boggles.

That's OK then, keep the cheap copies off the streets  . I detest any samurai sword sold for ornamental purposes. Live blades ahoy!!!!!

Thinking about it , its more a case of MPs scared of revolution,
'97 no guns ,
'98ish heavier sentences for knives
06 no swords,
namely as 58million people can easily bum rush parliment and have a good old'e fashioned lynching

Well thats a sad state of affairs then isn't it?
No one will actually be able to tell the difference between a 'real' samurai sword and a fake one, which in effect will mean all the real ones are banned.
If Japanese people don't want the swords, and they'll be banned in this country there will only be a few people around the world who will truly appreciate them.
I suppose we'd better leave it to the infidel Americans to dilute the cultures of everyone around the world, and be the only ones to appreciate the Samurai Sword!
Kitchen knives kill more people than any other type of blade, but no-one wants to ban those...

I suppose the original argument being they don't pack their houses with their own cultural paraphinalia... well they do.
We don't dress up as morris dancers on special occasions, or in a collar and ruff, or doublet and hose, or do archery every weekend, or wear a powdered wig or any of those things. Therefore the Japanese have a better continuation of their own cultural heritage than we do.

Thats not true either, it just happens that the European style of clothing, trousers, shirts etc. has become very universal. I assure you, if you go to Japan, for every person you find wearing a kimono you will find 100 wearing Levis and a t-shirt with an English slogan on. England has it's cultural problems, thats for sure, but Japan is hardly better.
I dont approve of banning samurai swords, i dont approve of banning anything if possible. I just think it is a bit lame that people have these samurai swords that they have no cultural link with, its not like England doesent have a great history of making swords. Although to be honest, i have to question (but not ban, crucially) anyone who wants to have swords in their house "for decoration".

Well I'd have to question anyone who rides around on a strange machine with two wheels and an engine and no impact protection in a world where very hard metal boxes on wheels reign supreme.
Personally I'd quite happily sit all day and look at firearms be they live or deactivated. I'd love to be able to collect deactivated firearms and admire their engineering. Firearms are about the only real demonstration of high quality reliable small scale mechanical engineering. They are works of genius.
There is such a stigma with owning replica or deactivated weapons however, that I will probably never own one (that and it costs a lot of money for a decent semi auto).
I'd quite happily sit and look at a well made samurai sword in my house... its certainly better than the lace doilys and stuff some people have. Again, its admiration of the engineering, and a symbol of something that has been lost with the advent of firearms and missiles and high tech weaponry; The Warrior.
Honour and other warrior virtues have been lost in an age where you can kill tens of thousands of enemy with the press of a button. There's nothing honorable in that. However the Samurai represented something honorable... service to the Shogun. That was back in the days when war had rules and a strict code of conduct called the Bushido.
No one has that any more. And if people want to appreciate Samurai swords because they look good in their house then why not? I happen to have an inkling of their true symbolism and the true effort that went into making the sword. Even if I can't afford a genuine folded steel weapon, an affectation would still represent my interest and regard for the symbol.
Some people collect Key rings, some collect dollies. I bet some people collect Samurai Swords. Its not a strange perversion just because it is a weapon. It often seems to be weapons that fascinate me the most. Not so I can go out and kill and maim, but it fascinates me as to the effort a man and mankind will go to to improve methods of killing. As I said, firearms are often truly amazing examples of small scale precision engineering. You don't see that kind of quality or workmanship elsewhere... except maybe in the production of swords.

Did I miss something? Was I thrown out of the Human Race and not given the memo?
I like weapons. When we moved into the House in December I wasn't concerned with the House itself, the garden was kind of "meh", the garage was okay but what made my day was finding an air rifle the previous owners had left in the shed. Despite being rusty it still works - I was proper made up.
I have one Daisho, a simple wood Katana as used in "Invincible", I also have a Katana and a very fanciful Katana. I have two fantasy type knives and two germanic type broadswords.
Mind you I spend a number of my weekends as a Saxon carrying a Seax, Spear and Shield.

That may be true, but they never dropped nuclear bombs on people! 
As I said above, a Samurai sword is an almost ideal representation of the duality of the human race (or man, some would argue).
Humans are capable of great beauty in creation, and of terrible acts of destruction and violence. We all have the capability of doing deeds both great and terrible, and the Samurai sword/swords are a fantastic reminder of that.

I have a sword, it's not a samurai sword though as I think they're pretty crap.
Ban samurai swords, leave the rest alone.
