OK I broke down today - nail in tyre - tubed so stuck where i was.
cost me £105 today to get home and repair puncture.
Im not covered for roadside

Looking into it to cover me in any vehicle and or bike would cost 175 including 2 calls in europe. which would include getting home at a cost coverage of £2500 with RAC.

How much do people pay and what does it cover and who with?

With H&R insurance www.insurance2000.co.uk gave me free (I'm sure that there was a cost Thinking) UK breakdown on bikes less than 15 years old, no good to me at the time as the ZXR was a 15 years half through the agreement Rolling Eyes

Its something that people should spend a few pennies on as it is much cheaper in the longterm if needed.

I've needed them several times, the bike has only broken down less than 10miles from home and its been nearly £70 a pop, so as Colin says £30 is pretty well spent.

The recovery services should have bike policies too, try the big ones like the AA, RAC and Green Flag.

When taking insurance quotes, I don't always take the cheapest, I look for what they include and my pre-requisite is usually Third Party cover on other bikes and Breakdown recovery, fortunately for me my cheapest quote included both for me, which pretty much saved my bank account. I got a puncture on May Day last year about 130 miles from home, with no tyre places open. It would have cost me £400 to get home, which is twice the amount my insurance for the year cost, so i'm grateful that I had actually had breakdown cover.

So either go with a breakdown company or look for it in insurance, I would argue on a bike that breakdown cover is essential.

I always try to get cover that covers me on any vehicle and will take me to my location of choice in the UK - usually around £80-£90.

I have now got it by paying extra for a 'premium' bank account - while it will cost more after the first year, it also includes other stuff like mobile phone insurance etc.

The recovery you get included with Carole Nash insurance is pretty comprehensive. That's a major reason I use them. Europe included and no crappy ten mile limit, they take you and the bike home.

I got breakdown cover included with my insurance too (Bennetts), just an extra couple of quid a month IIRC. Dunno about european cover though, I'd have to check

I've already used it once, and found them to be very quick and professional - I was back on the road within an hour of the original call Thumbs Up

Happened to me too - queue-hopping on the middle of the road crud in London. I now carry a puncture repair kit under the seat- a reamer, plugs and compressed air, on the advice of a mate, who said they are easy to use. Fortunately haven't needed to use it yet. Cost £20, and you don't have to hang around waiting for AA.

Gone back to the AA after a few years with International Breakdown (who've started being pissy about vans and older cars).

Got 'family cover' for the house - you don't actually have to be related, just live at the same address.

£136 for the year between the three of us - covers cars, bikes, vans (whether we own them or not) for roadside and relay.

If you've got cover with your insurance, make sure you read the fineprint. The policy I had with Bennetts many years ago had a maximum mileage (about 15 if I remember) after which you started being charged.

I'm with Stinkwheel. Carole Nash seem to cover it all with their policy.

I'm in the Carol Nash camp as well, although how it will continue now Carol Nash has been taken over by GMB (I think it is) I will have to wait and see when my insurance is due.

Other people I have been with, AA, RAC and to be honest there isn't much between them. I like them because it is you protected so whether you are on your bike, in your car or even in your mates banger, they will come out.

With them though, get relay. Don't bother with anything else as no way they will be able to fix your bike at the road side. You just want to get it home.

Just be aware with the Carole Nash scheme that there have been cases of CN refusing to repatriate the broken 'bike because the cost of recovery was deemed to be more than the 'bike was worth.
