My OH has had a 'crackly' chest for 2/3 months
I MADE him go to the quacks Rolling Eyes
They sent him straight to the hospital, he had an x ray and then they ring me at work-

Fully collapsed left lung Shocked And he was walking around, working etc...
He did have a bad cough, was short of breath etc but I wasn't expecting this

Just been to see him and he is in agony. Tube in his side between his ribs Sick
Very bad state of affairs Sad

They said it is usually men, fit, in their 20s and 30s. And it happens for no reason. Bang. Just like that

It happened to his brother last year. Twice. And he said it may keep happening now, and it will take him 2 weeks to get back to work.

Amazing how something like this can just happen.
Go to the docs for a cough, end up with your side cut open.
Anyone else had similar?

OH, tall, lanky and dark haired?

Sponatenous pneumothorax is common in this 'type' of person, the reasons are maunly due to a weakness or abnormality in their make up.

He has a bottle of water on the floor with the tube bubbling away when he breathes? An under water sealed drain is the treatment for a pneumothorax.

Tallish, dark, lankyish but with a beer belly Thumbs Up Laughing
Bless him xxx Sad

He has like a white box, sealed, to collect air, with a blue water tubey thing on it that moves up and down when he breathes in and out

He also has a WELL cool bed that inflates/deflates in places to prevent bed sores apparently
Nice to know he is being looked after Thumbs Up

ALSO.. will it really take TWO weeks for him to go back to work?

Returing to work Thinking 2 weeks sounds about average following something like this.

https://www.cancerhelp.org.uk/cancer_images/pleurtap.gif

We have clear ones in our trust, it all much of a muchness. The drain relies on a vacuum and the water level prevents air from returning into the pleural space and causing more problems.

As long as he keeps the bottle below his waist he can walk around (or more importantly to the loos, and not use a comode Laughing )

The air bed may actually be a pain in the harris after a while as people complain that they make you feel sea sick.

If it makes you feel better, Dusty had three chest drains in simultaneously after the accident (the car accident I mean).

He couldn't laugh or cough without wincing in pain. So it could be worse!

Apart from being uncomfortable, it shouldn't hurt (says he thats never had one Shifty)

Just make sure that he asks for regular pain relief and he must try and cough a couple of times an hour as well as practicing deep breathing.

He is in AGONY

They tried to get air out through a needle first through the top of his chest, near the collar bone, but just a bit further down
It didn't work, so all of the muscle there is bruised and his chest is bright red from the pushing, etc...
He can't lift his arms much at all
It hurts too much

He hurts internally, all down the left hand side
He has had a quite powerful pain relief tablet, but they said they would give him morphine soon as it is not taking much pain away

He is coughing anyway (has to)

His brother was CRYING last year when his collapsed. The pain was so bad
So, I wouldn't want it to happen to me. It looks dreadful
I feel so sorry for him Sad

I can gaurentee that you had one a little while later when you reached A&E.

In a full examination following an RTA like yours is to do a PR (ie one up the glory hole)

Kate Moss had an RTA near to our hospital a while back and was taken to our A&E, whereby one of the registrars had the lovely task of doing this to the very famous model Laughing something to tell people at dinner parties Very Happy

All joking aside, once a drain is in, you should feel better and able to breathe with greater ease.

Well, I have heard the NHS called a farce, and now I believe I concur with this Thumbs Up

OH had his drain tube removed at 3.45 yesterday, and then had an x ray after tea time.
He was told a doc would look at it and then he could come home.

All day we have been waiting. I finally went to visit him at 2.30 and no-one had seen him all day. No-one had even got his x ray out of the sleeve and looked at it. Nothing

I then went to the nurses station to be informed that there is only ONE doctor for the whole of the hospital and he has to prioritise his work (fair enough, I don't want someone to die because the doc was looking at an x ray). But ONE doctor!!?? Shocked
In the s ame bay as him there were 2 other blokes waiting to go. Not sick. Just sitting, waiting... and waiting. The bloke next to him waited 48 hours to go after first being told he could, and the old bloke opposite him was told on THURSDAY that he could go, but ..'the doc just needs to look at you first'.
He is still there. His family arrive every day to take him home... then say their goodbyes at the end of visiting each day.. again.

The old bloke wanders back and forth to the nurses station asking "Any joy yet"? (meaning any sign of a doctor), only to come back disappointed Crying or Very sad

It is quite shocking. They say there is a bed shortage, but they won't send fit, healthy people home!!

I have told him to just get dressed and walk out, but he won't. I could not stand it in there. Everyone is just sitting there quietly expecting to go home. And nothing happens. So they sit again..
It is maddening!

OH overheard a nurse quit last night too as she was told she wouldn't be able to go on a holiday she booked last May for this May! They said 3 staff were off, so she couldn't go. So in her words she 'told them to shove the job' and walked out Exclamation
Good state of affairs eh ?
Rant over. Off to take more clothes to OH for his extended stay. Oh, and to pay another £2 for the car park Confused

Well, just got him home
(Finally)

After popping back we were assured a doctor would arrive in half an hour.
So an hour and a half later TWO doctors turned up Shocked

They had three to discharge. One looked at the bloke opposite OH, the other doc looked at a woman. And off they went...home... happily Very Happy

Then the woman doc vanished, and the male doc ran out of the ward (prob on a call)

At this point I was starving. hadn't eaten all day, blah blah, so said to Oh I had to go. I had our daughter to feed to.
And sods law... the minute I got home - phonecall "Can you come and collect me. The doctor came back to see me..."

Good thing is I finally got him home 24 hours later Thumbs Up

He is quite down about the whole hospital experience. He said the staff were thin on the ground, and those that were there were v stressed out and harsh, especially to elderly patients.
They staff didn't really know about the patients. They tried to inject the bloke opposite OH with something when he doesn't have injections, and tried to remove OH's chest drain when it had already been removed 24hrs earlier!
It was, to be honest, a bit of a shambles. I could go on, but won't.
I know not all the NHS staff are like this, but it has defo put OH off entering said hospital again, and me too. Not to be a cop out but if possible it will be private care in the future and do a comparison.

Sorry you and your OH had a bad experience with an inpatient stay and I hope that I give a much better and efficient service to my patients.

Poor care is not acceptable in any situation, but being human shit happens.

Of a weekend they have an on call service, so its skeleton staff and yes they dont know one patient from Adam, so getting them to do things is a little hard at times.

As long as there is a plan in the notes from your OH's team for them to follow, a little assertiveness later and Bobs your uncle.

I recently see the NHS from the other side when the wife miscarried and I am still waiting for my compalints to be answered as the care and standards my wife received were poor to say the least.

I'm not even going to start with this thread, I've had five spontanious pneuomothoraxes, tubes in my chest in a different place every time, and two full operations (One on each lung) to prevent it happening again...

My chest looks like a pin cussion.

I hope your other half is feeling better soon and makes a full recovery Thumbs Up

As a matter of principle you should write a formal letter of complaint to the hospital. If you don't get a response (or if you don't get a satisfactory response) you can then choose to take the complaint further. If no one complains then the management team of the hospital will never know there is anything wrong.
