I just nipped into a spray shop to get a price for re-spraying the CB. He said £400, which includes prep, spray (single colour), stickers application and laquer. He said £250 if I did the sanding myself.

Do these prices sound about right? There's no way I'm spending £400 on it so would the prep be difficult? Is it just a case of sanding it down and if so what is the best way to do it - with an electric sander?

The sanding aspect is the most important part and you need to know what you are doing to ensure that the final finish will look good.

If you screwup the sanding part there would be no chance of placing any blame on the painter. Although in retrospect he should check the sanding to ensure it's ok before he starts.

Regards,
Kevo.

£400 - there surely isn't that many panels to be painted on the CB?

I'd shop around a bit more mate, I know my father has done fairings for sports bikes in one colour with laquer etc (no stickers) for a hell of a lot less than £400 (in fact he's painted full cars for less than that!).

As Kevo said the preparation work is the most important part - if that isn't done correctly the paint will look rubbish/flake off/generally be a bad job all round.

I suggest looking for some of the private small spray garages around and see what they would cost if you just took the panels into them.

I was quoted around £350-£400 for the GSXR750 and there was lots to spray on that! I'd deffo shop around, but don't bother sanding yourself

Yeah i thought £400 seemed a bit steep. There is only the seat cowl, the side radiator covers and the tank to do. Would the tank be removed for the spraying or do they just mask the rest of the bike to do it?

They should remove everything (that is to be sprayed) from the bike. Do you have (access to) a car? If so, then it might possibly be cheaper if you take the bits off yourself, and take 'em to the paint job. But the place that you mention sounds way too expensive anyway.

I have the number for a chap in Swindon who is going to do MrsHippys V-Raptor. He's charging £350 for the lot, and it's not a cheap paint. If you are going for something simple then it shouldn't cost more than about £250.
