Every month I buy streetfighter mag and every month there's always a GSXR 1100 featured, is there a particular reason? The only obvious thing I can see is the frame, It's pretty slim compared to most bikes. Seems a pretty pointless thread but does anybody know why theres hundreds of them? Laughing

I know what you mean mate, the 1100 really is the XR3i of the streetfighter's.

Their a bit better now then they were back in '96-'00.

Tuneability;

The fact the bike had quite scary handling;

The fact that the 1100 engine fits into the 750 frame (which had better handling characteristics);

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

The 1100 wasn't made after 96.

In my mind they should of called the >96 gixxers RF-X's or something. Once you lose the high frame you lose the DNA that makes it a GSXR. Not saying the newer GSXR's arn't good (they obviously are), but they are something altogether different from brutal simplicity of the originals.

I meant how many 1100's featured in streetfighters.

I know they wasn't made after '96 but streetfighters were/are still building bikes around that engine.

A true streetfighter will take parts from any bike they like and make it into something they can ride.

Largely a myth.

The 1100K was quite twitchy but all others handled fine even if the later ones were a bit heavy. Early 1986-89 models handle very well with suspension in good fettle and with later 17" wheels fitted. Later models just need setting up.

It's a heritage thing, the term Streetfighter and the phrase 'crashed and tuned GSXR' meant the same thing for years. In recent years the term has been hijacked, and any gay little thing can be called a streetfighter as long as it's missing a fairing. If it ain't a tuned GSXR (or at the very least a tuned Blade) it ain't a streetfighter.

Not completely true. BSH were the first to use the term streetfigher to describe a superbike that had been modified to improve the performance and handling rather than just its looks. GSXR's were a favourite because they had good solid engines that were easily tuned and had a light frame. I'm pretty sure CBR's were just as popular for the same reasons.

Thought you might appreciate some eye candy:

That's my mate's 1100 GSXR '88 I think, streetfighter. Built from scratch with R1 forks and loads of other trick bits.
