Fell off my bike last November, and hurt my knee. Actually heard a loud snap, but did nothing at the time as I had my bike test coming up. It was not getting better, and I saw the consultant this week and he said I've got cartilage damage and a ruptured cruciate ligament.

He wants to do a hamstring graft, and says I'll be off work for at least two weeks, and on crutches for four weeks. Is this right? It seems like an awful long time?

Has anyone had this done, and how long did it take to recover? I'm going to be off my bike for a month by the sounds of things. Sad

Yes I've had one done and waiting for investigations into the other leg for the same thing.

Look at 3 months off work minimum.

I've also had this done.....

The hamstring graft is rather painful and yes, it really does take a long time to get over! Well think about it... They are actually doing more damage to an already painful leg! Sickpup's right in the 3 month bit... you may feel like it before, but chances are you wont!

Am waiting on the same thing for my left knee now!

Just realised. Unlike Loz I didn't have a hamstring graft I had a patella tendon graft, still got a hole in my knee cap. Ask your surgeon why he's choosing one over the over.

God those are some scars! I fell over for the first time last night- slipped on some water and went arse over tit with my knee totally going. Bloody painful. My duaghter (13) had five of her friends over for a sleepover so I shall have to say to the parents as they no doubt learnt some new swear words. Laughing

I've had three children, and I can honestly say that hurt worse than labour, so I can't wait to get it done now. Thanks guys Thumbs Up

The pain IS in a league of it's own because coupled with pain, you have self consciousness to deal with and that sickening feeling...
Although I've always found the 'boing-iness' about it rather amusing....

I've gone down flights of stairs because of it, and gone sprawling in work the worst one was falling through a glass panel in a door when trying to regain my balance Laughing All fun and games...

Sickpup I guess there's your answer to why are they doing the hamstring graft, I should imagine it's the scarring issue!
Shona.... My scar is tiny, I was actually gutted when I came round as I was hoping for a 9 incher (as do we all Wink ) the picture actually picks it up quite well for once Thumbs Up but normally you can only see it if it's pointed out to you... 4 very small ones around the kneecap maybe 1.5cm maximum and the 2 (ish) inch one at the front! They do all the work through there! (Impressive eh?)

Only two of the smaller scars are from the ACL replacement, had a lot of other work done on my knees.
