Me too. Often thought of getting a super-motard because they are mad as f*ck bikes. The idea of wheelying down to the shops one handed appeals greatly...... Very Happy

What's difference between Supermoto and trailies?...and would a motocross bike be?

They all look the same to me...

A supermoto is a trailie/motocross (pretty much the same thing) bike with road tyre (& wheels usualy) and better brakes.
The 'traditional' method for riding them is with your foot stuck out next to the front wheel when you're going round corners... this lets you spin the backwheel up and slide it round. In theory they should go round twisty roads better than big sports bikes because of the sliding rear wheel, tourquie engines and they weigh bugger-all.
They're usually raced on half tarmac/half dirt tracks.

I did ride a KLR650 around for a while: big trail bike with road tyres... but far too heavy & underpowered to be a proper supermoto. I managed a few decent slides... but I was doing it by putting on too much power and didn't realise supermoto riders usually do it by dropping down a gear or two and using the engine braking to get the rear sliding (there was a hole in my exhaust so I didn't have much engine braking).

AFAIK,
A motorcross (or crosser) is a off road biased bike (for example a DT125 etc) comes with knobbly off road tyres. Stuff like that.

A supermotard (the Honda XR in the pic for example) is a crosser with road tyres (usually smaller-but-fatter wheels). This style of bike originated in France (Eugh!) with the super-motard racing series, where half the track is generally tarmac/gravel and the other half dirt.

A trailie is a mix of the above, but is usually far more road biased (larger seats, proper screens, half faired Honda Varadero types, and are generally shite off road. Usually used for touring and stuff.

But I'm probably wrong...

I forget waht that sort of bike is called... but it's not a trailie which is a term generally used for a generic off road bike as opposed to say a motocrosser/enduro etc.

Things like the Varadero are usally described as something like 'Adventure Tourers' or some other american marketing bullshit.

I just flicked through a copy of BIKE and the Honda Varadero, Aprilia Caponord, Suzuki V-Storm all called 'trailies'.

'Big' trailies perhaps and various other stuff, but the term 'trailie' was around a long time before this type of bikes existed... It's perhaps more appropriate to stuff like the KLR650, DR600-800 etc but there's no way any of the big v-twins are designed to go near any kind of trail (look at the mud guards to start with)

as far as i know

the capanord, varadero etc are all classed as dual purpose, in other words can be used for anything but dont quite fit anywhere, you can go toruing, run them down green lanes, or commute

Bikes like the KLR have allways been sold as 'dual purpose' (In the US anyway) and you can reasonably take one down a green lane etc. The manufactures would like you to believe their bikes can go off road, but there's no way they were designed for it (200kg, road wheels & tyres and road biased suspension)
