I've been looking at big twins recently and the firestorm was a fave but after having a go it handles a bit too softly, looking at others there are only Dukes and the SV/TL1000.

I've always thought never get an SV, but then the SV1000 is really just a TL1000S with a different frame and suspension right?.

So is the SV1000S just a SV650S with a bigger lump or are they quite different? , I've generally considered the SV650S a bit iffy, and own many of them to work , but for a brief few seconds I see a SV1000S burn past me each morning.

they seem ridculously cheap for a 120bhp 192kilo 1000cc 'sports' bike or is it like the SV650 a bike that is only pretending to be a sports bike?



Any thoughts? (note after a high torque bike the Sv1000S seems to tick my boxes)

The SV1000 isn't that high torque, it's just low power Wink.

It does however have a relatively wide range of torque, which is another thing.
The SV650 can be fast; the suspension on either isn't great as standard, but obviously the 1000 can make up for it a bit in straight line speed.

Personally, I'd go for the TL-S.

I dont think the sv1000s has 120break, more like 90 from what i remember.

The TL1000s is deefinatly alot more sports bike than the SV 650s/1000s

Hi, SV1000 with just a pair of cans produces 110bhp at the wheel. Nice wide range of torque, but don't fool yourself into buying it thinking it's a TLR, that's a whole different beast, having said that, if you don't want to ride an entire beast, the SV1000 ticks many, many boxes. Smile

Feel free to come ride mine if you're down south some day. ;p

The SV1000S has (a claimed) 120PS for the 2003-04 models. That seems to come to 108 at the rear wheel. The 2005-on version (with the black frame) have internal engine mod's (higher compression ratio, bigger throttle bodies) claimed to add another 5 PS, apparently at the expense of some midrange.

It produces the same sort of torque as other 1000cc V-twins, and like big V-twins, across a wide rev-range.

Although it has an engine developed from the original TL1000S engine, it's supposedly seen a lot of modifications. But then this is an engine that's found it's way into quite a lot of other bikes. It definitely does not have a vicious power delivery.

The SV1000 is more a bigger SV650 than a TL1000 successor. It's therefore more of a sporty road bike than a V-twin race rep. Consider it to be an updated equivalent to a Firestorm, or a more budget equivalent to an Aprilia Falco.

The engine is pretty decent with a smooth power delivery, with good fueling at all revs. Any jerkiness at low revs is due to it being a V-twin. It's slightly lacking in top-end compared to say an RSV.[1] Has a semi-slipper clutch. The handling is decent, but the standard suspension components are a bit on the budget side (but still fully adjustable). Brakes are conventional 4-pots from a 2001 GSXR, and it's got close to sportsbike weight. It does feel a bit longer than a sportsbike, slowing the steering, but probably help it feel roomier onboard. Performance-wise, I think a 600 rider would need to work keeping up on a road, but would disappear on a trackday.

From a practical POV it works fairly well. The riding position is less full-on than a modern sportsbike - closer to a CBR600F. The seat is a little hard, the pegs a little high and the tank a little small - otherwise it'd be a good budget sports-tourer. The clocks are good and clear, lights are OK on dipped, good on full beam (and both come on). Mirrors are too close together. Can be accessorised to make it more of a sports-tourer, or more of a sports bike. Fuel consumption is 40mpg with brisk but not banzai riding. Bungee points on footpegs, but not a lot of room under the pillion seat. Running costs are similar to a sports 600. Finish is standard Suzuki. Overall, a lot of bike for the money, but not a full-on sports bike, more of an everyday use kind of bike in standard trim.

I bought one because I've already got a 600, and wanted more of an all-rounder to go with that, and appreciate a bit of roll-on torque when riding on the road.


[1] I'd say it has a bit less top-end than my previous bike, which couldn't quite keep up with an RSV driving out of corners onto a straight on trackdays.

Ive got a sv1000s and an sv650, albeit the sv650 is downgeared quite alot, there dosnt seem to be that much of as differen, just more power to play with with the thou and slightly louder Very Happy.

Took them both on the drag strip yesterday, and there was a 0.9 second difference over the standing 1/4 miles.

Though it is alot easier to keep wheelies going on the 1000 than the sv650 Twisted Evil
