Ok, yesterday I managed to annoy a horse rider.

When I go past horses in my car, I slow down, change up a gear or two as conditions dictate, and pass them as widely as I can, and as at low revs as possible.

Two weeks ago on my bike, I met a riding school coming the other way, so I took similar action - slowed down, changed up, and moved over in my lane. The horsey people gave me a friendly wave, and I went on my way.

Yesterday, a similar situation, but only one horse. Took same steps, but the horse didn't like it. In fact, it reared up a little, and the woman riding it went off on one - I could hear her through my helmet.

Was I doing anything wrong? Could I have done more to help keep the horse peaceful? There are quite a lot of horsey people in my area, so I'd like to keep them happy.

It all depends on the horse itself, maybe the one you passed yesterday was a particularly nervous horse, and the rider got a bit scared by it rearing slightly (who wouldn't?)

Just continue to do what you're doing, if it looks like particularly young riders, maybe give them a bit more room (if conditions allow) Thumbs Up

If you were doing the same as last time (exactly) it could have been a dodgy horse and so the rider blamed you.

Try riding in a lower gear like almost idling past a horse at 10mph-ish.

If you cant physically go any slower tell her/him to shut it and buy some road tax Razz

Pull the clutch in and coast by.

And next time, if some stupid horsey bloke or woman has a go at you stop, get off your bike and tell them in no uncertain terms to get f@*%ed.

Thanks for the tips.

While I'm not going to do it near horses, I am now going to practise back firing!

Soft as it seems you may be startling the horse by goin past so slow. It may not hear you and jump when you suddenly appear in its view. I always slow down, keep the revs constant as I pass them giving them plenty of space so they can hear me approaching.

Never had problems with any as yet, and there are bloody hundreds of potential McD's meat trotting around this area.

I too live near loads of riding stables.

I think that if you own a horse you should thrash it about wild west style, not mince along the road side by side talking about how your better than everyone else because you have a horse.

As far as passing them I think you did th right thing mate. You went past slow and wide with low revs, if the horse can't handle that then the owner shouldn't be taking it on the roads in my opinion.

I also find it strange how people will buy a horse then sell it after a couple of years like you would a car. But isn't it a living pet??
I just don't get the 2nd hand horse market.
191: Horse riders. Be particularly careful of horses and riders, especially when overtaking. Always pass wide and slow. Horse riders are often children, so take extra care and remember riders may ride in double file when escorting a young or inexperienced horse rider. Look out for horse riders' signals and heed a request to slow down or stop. Treat all horses as a potential hazard and take great care.
Yeh I'd say you did the right thing, there isn't a huge amount you can do but slow down, keep the revs lower, and pass wide.

I still think they shouldn't be allowed on the road, what the hell are you meant to do when you meet them straight after a corner when you are doing 60?

I have to confess my daughter has a horse, but I would never allow her to take it onto a main road even though it is very good with traffic.

There are a lot of people with horses with the biggest attitude problem I have ever come across. Arrogant bastards is the nicest thing to say about them.

How the law allows anyone to ride a large animal on todays roads with no checking of ability to control it is absolutly stupid. You and I have to learn and take tests to drive and ride inanimate machinery yet we could get on any horse and ride it on the road with no instruction. Bloody stupid Mad

And yes, you did everything right, slow dow, give room. I've even stopped when I didn't trust the rider.

The horse riders in Suffolk just seem to let them shit all over the place, with very little regard for your average motorcyclist.

I'd say if you were doing the same as usual then it was ok.

One of a group of untethered ponies leapt out in front of me during one of my DAS rides. Shocked

It was a scene straight out of a hazard perception video!!! Laughing

I ride horses and I can appreciate what your doing but I do find that sometimes (depending on which horse I'm riding) that if a bike or car slows down to drive past, the horse can get even more tetchy. I prefer it when the car/bike just drives past as normal cause then the horse doesn't have time to look at it and get spooked, and to the horse a vehicle slowly approaching or going past can be quite threatening. I really hate it when people drive past slower than I walk! Razz
Laughing I get what your saying about the test thing but the amount of crap we go through anyway with the goverment (banning hunting, putting chips in our horses, tax on livery going up) if someone tried giving me a test so I could ride my horse.... Laughing

Laughing I wish.
Nah we have to put micro chips in them so they can be traced if stolen (big brother kinda thing if you ask me), the rub is that if we don't put the chips in them we get a shitty fine and we also have to pay for passports for the horse or get a fine, even a little hacking pony! Mad

But on the plus side, if your horse is stolen it will be more easily traced, and shouldn’t end up as burgers in a Parisian café. I actually work 5 floors above the people who control the Horse Passport scheme.

When we had our passports to do our horses they have the vet draw the horse and colour it in... wouldn't it be smarter to take an actual picture of the horse? Yes it is handy but the price for a passport is a bit much, my horse has been stolen before and the passport didn't help find him he wanderd back on his own! Laughing

I thought there were 3 outlines on the silhouette card, rather than the vet drawing it (which would disadvantage the less artistic vets!). Anyway, I agree it is strange that the vet has to colour the template in, rather than taking photos. Perhaps that is because the vet can sign it off immediately, rather then waiting. I'll ask, if you want. Also, we did argue against chipping of all foals.

Homing horses are a good idea.

I suppose this isn't quite off-topic yet, but it's probably getting close!

lol I exagerated a bit there Razz yea the vet does colour the horse in or something to that effect.
It is a good idea I just don't think it should be made compulsory or being able to fine people for it. It should be the ownersw choice, oh we also get taxed for how big our muck heap is.... urgh Evil or Very Mad
Only just found that one out. Yup getting slightly off topic Razz
