OK, looking for some backup here. I'm having an argument with someone on another forum about his bikes.

He's asking for help (and parts) to get a bike on the road ready for the summer coming. Nowt wrong with that i hear you say, and I kind of agree. So, at the moment he has 3 bikes, a 750 FR with a knackered engine (no compression), a CB750 with dodgy electrics so won't start that will also need a new back tyre and rear shocks for an MOT and an LTD440 with buggered carbs. he reckons he can scrape together maybe a couple of hundred quid for parts etc and is asking for people to go over and help with the spannering.

Now IMO he's wasting his time. He's had all 3 of these bikes for as long as I've known him (about 5 years) and I've only ever seen him out on one of them (the CB) once in all that time - even then I seem to remember it broke down and went home on an AA wagon!

So my solution to his problem is to get all 3 on ebay and flog them for spares or repair, get maybe a couple of hundred each if he's lucky, pool this with the repair money and he'll have about £500-£700 in his hand. Go buy a better, more reliable bike!

He reckons all he could get for £700 is another piece of shit that someone is unloading and he might as well keep working on what he's got.

My opinion is that it is fine to keep a bike (or bikes) for tinkering with if you like to tinker, BUT only if you have something half-decent to ride as well. Otherwise what is the point?

What do you reckon? Kind of related to Mr Z's question about the point of no return do you think?

for £700 as long as you aren't being too picky you can easily pick up a reliable bike in good condition, GPZ500 off the top of my head but there's loads more stuff you can easily pick up.

Got a RF400 for £300 on here. Came with some tax and text; has worked fine for me so far, a few bits that need doing for MOT, but shouldn't be more than £50 in parts and grease

Maybe he is attached to the bikes, I would be after 5 years, but sat for 5 years is bad for me let alone a motorcycle.

Personally I'd pick the one that required least fiddling with and sell the other two. If it's taken him that long to get nowhere, use the money to pay someone who knows what they are doing to fix the bike for him.

Paid £580 or so for the GS650 katana, and its in brilliant condition, runs sweet and came with a tonne of spares including complete spare running engine, almost complete engine in bits, shocks, carbs, gaskets blah blah and other stuff I aint even searched through yet. Spares filled up the car.

Lots of good cheap bikes out there.

I got my 1991 GPZ500S for £400 just last year, and it flew thru the MOT.

I'd say, either sell all three and buy a more reliable replacement, or at the very least, sell two and use the money to repair the third bike
