I'm stuck on a question with my college work.

It's asking me what method of manufacturing would you use to make a lathe bed.
Now a lathe bed can be pretty big, but it is a simple shape by all accounts so it doesnt need to be such an intricate process.
I was thinking Shell moulding, followed by sand casting.
I just wondered if someone could confirm im on the right track or no where near.

Thanks

K Thumbs Up

Well a lathe bed is definitely a casting, so your along the right track.

Most large casting are made using the sand casting method as far as i am aware. Although i have not heard of shell moulding but I'm an apprentice so that's my excuse for not knowing.

Here's a link of wiki that may help

lathe bed would probably be casting, followed by machining, to ensure the surfaces are smooth enough, and flat enough for mating with the lathe parts.

Hi

I was under the impression that the finish on the lathe bed is very important. Suspect case do to ease of production, but very accuratly machined afterwards.

All the best

That Wikipidia (spelling) has helped me out, plus my college notes, i've cracked it now.
The machining is very important afterwards, but it was just the intial method used.

Thanks guys! Thumbs Up
