Greetings from sunny Moscow... I'll be returning to Oz in December just in time for summer and will finally get my Oz bike licence. I am restricted for the first 15 months to a 250cc bike and don't know what sort of bike to get.

As I'm a learner I don't want any fancy bike until I can handle one properly. My biggest problem is my size: 6 ft 3 and 90kgs (sorry, no idea what that is in stones, think its about 200 pounds).

any ideas out there as to what bike might suit me?

Thanks in advance

Have the rules changed or something? I could've sworn that I read somewhere that you (Aussies) can ride anything up to 400cc on a provisional licence?

Failing that, I would say that a 250 crosser, such as a CRM250, could be quite suitable. I don't think that you'll be comfortable on any of the sports 250s.

I'm around 6 foot and had an RGV250 for a year, though i'm about 70kgs. The comfort wasn't too bad on a/b roads(single carriageways) because you had something to take your mind off the contorted positions of your legs, however on long motorway journeys it was pretty fucking bad to the point of being painful Shocked.

I don't think RGV's are learner legal in a few states of Australia anyway because of a power to weight ratio regulation. Apparently they imposed it after 25% odd of riders with an RGV as their first bike was seriously hurt or killed in their first year of riding Shocked!

Funnily enough though my arms were nowhere near as bad; my VFR400 gives me more wrist ache.

I'm 6'7", ride a NSR125 and it feels fine! I would prefer a fireblade but I think thats a few years down the line yet.

i'm 6`3" and I used to race 250`s which fitted me ok and the kr1s i just sold fitted me very well. Alot of the problem is it depends where you are tall, I know it sounds a funny thing to say but if you take for example me and craig, we are both the same hight but his legs ar alot longer than mine so he cant ride some bikes. We both had a go on a rvf400 a while ago and I was ok on it but craig had to sit on the back seat.

yeah in Victoria the rules are now 250cc for 3 months as a learner then another 12 months 250cc as a provisional. It used to be if you have a full car licence the 12 month period was waived but not now according to the school I phoned.

Anyway, thanks for your views. I'll check out the various bikes mentioned as a starting point...

You could also consider something like an rd250 (having just got the 350 version I would say that Smile ). While the general performance won't be up there with newer sports bikes, the power shouldn't be too bad in comparison because it's a 2 stroke.
Mine's had some motorcross handlebars stuck on (easy conversion) which makes it pretty roomy and comfortable.

And I think I am 6'2". Although I have'nt been measured for years. And kev, perhaps you slouch so much because you used to race 250s. Razz

What are you doing out in Moscow?

Where are you staying there?

Rd250 isn't a daft option, an ex was 6'2" and rode one without any trouble. For a 250 they're not particularly slow, though do lack the looks of an RGV. (Call me a bike tart G... I can handle it!)

I live in Dinamo just on the circle edge. it is such a lovely shoebox!
