Shocked ...just pulled away at a crossroad, had it in 1st gear (as you would when you pull away), ragged it a bit, attepted to knock it into 2nd, but somehow messed it up and discovered I was still in 1st when I let the clutch out, front end dived, so tugged on the throttle, then attempted 2nd again, but when I let the clutch out it just revved, assumed I had knocked it into neutral, so tapped it up again... still just revved (had come to a stop by now, at the foot of a steep hill), tried tapping it up, then down, just kept revving, thought the clutch had failed... then noticed the chain just resting next to the sprocket on the rear wheel!

Could have been much worse I guess!

When was the last time you checked your chain tension?

just out of curiosity, is it completely unheard of for somebody to have a chain snap and cut into their leg? I've heard of people getting chucked off their bikes when a snapped chain caused the rear wheel to lock, but the idea of having a snapped chain lop my foot off always makes my arse clench Sick

Beaten to it but yes the can knock significant amount of material out of engineblocks/legs the other thing is say your travelling at 70 and the chain flys off and your unlucky enough for it to jam up the back wheel, well you can easily imagine what can happens next..

Having your chain maintained properly, fitting it properly and using a good brand makes it very unlikely to have problems, although a mate had his wheel lock up and he found the cause was a metal co2 cylinder had got lodged in the front sprocket (and cut it almost in half)

I'm not saying it to be smug but its one of the many reasons I couldn't have another chain drive bike again :/ if i did I'd make it an enclosure a-la cg125

Could this be down to the black visor that you received today Cool Laughing . It could be a lot worse, so you're pretty lucky that you were going at a slow speed. I think Dodsi's chain came off at the split link Confused Shocked but he managed to keep it up. Keeping chain well lubed and tensioned is the key to this sort of instances occuring. Anyway, you've learnt your lesson now, so please be careful next time around. 10 minutes on a paddock stand and some spanners surely won't hurt.

Also while cleaning and lubing look at it properly.
Sometimes one of the side plates will come adrift and but it will hang together for a while.

It always makes me squirm when I realise that chain is spinning at a phenomenal speed, inches away from my left foot. Sick

Yeah I'm pretty sure a motorbike chain can cut at least down to the bone in someones leg... I had a pushbike chain snap and cut my leg open... the scar has only just faded enough to not be noticeable!

My chain is lubed up and cleaned properly, I spent ages on it and the sprokets about 3-4 days ago, and I re-lube it before I go out on longer journeys, but I had trouble trying to tighten it, know I realise what I did wrong, but didn't have a chance to tighten it, I guess I should have made time to do it!

And no, I havn't sorted it yet, I was on my way home when it happened and managed to get the chain back on, I prob won't use the bike again until the weekend, but I will sort the chain out before I use it!

Its a mistake you only make once Twisted Evil

happened to me last year when i tried to get every last mile out of my chain before getting it replaced, it jumped onto the plates when i went over a speed hump and got very tight and twisted. loosened the rear wheel off put the chain on and tightened it up and got 2 miles before it went off permanently

make sure that your chain has not twisted! you will soon find out when it comes flying off again when the first hint of slack appears!

Shocked erm, isn't that enough of an incentive to make sure you keep on top of the maintenance?!
Keeping all my limbs intact and in the correct places is good enough for me Laughing LOL

I forgot to mention J.G. Parry-Thomas

he was killed in 1927 (in a car..) when the drive chain snapped... if i remember rightly his head was poking out one side of the cockpit at the time the chain snapped.... it took his head clean off Shocked

Chain snapped on my insurance hire bike (Suzuki Van Van). Hillstart away from lights, up into second and severed completely. Completely my fault - didn't clean it or lube it for 2 months... Embarassed

Happens to the best of us - my instuctor had his chain snap a few years ago - on his way to interview at the bike school!

You should be checking it near enough everytime you go out.

I go on the assumption that when some folks never check or even tighten their chains they never really bother to lube them either Confused

a paddock stand pays dividends when tightening your chain and more importantly when giving it a good lube. you may find that your chain life extends a bit more..... Wink
