It can be fine, obviously make sure the price reflects the mileage and give it a good looking over as with any bike.

I don't see why not. Thats only 2,200 ish miles per year.

I presume S is 1998?

That would make it a '98 R1...

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

That would be a high mileage for your average performance bike....but this isn't any average bike we're talking about is it.

Mates got a 99 R1 with 27,000miles, still runs perfectly fine. I think the valves only need checking every 24k miles....so haggle with that in mind. As long as it's been serviced it'll be fine.

Ok Gareth Gates we hear ya!

Yea long as the bike has been looked after, that amount of miles is really nothing to worry about.

Give it a good ragging as 2nd gear can go on the early R1s - look for a 'sloppy' change and dropping out of gear on hard acceleration / deceleration Thumbs Up

So say you brought one with 10,000 on the clock, when you've put 12,000 more on the clock will you stop riding it for fear of it blowing up?

22,000 miles is sod all mate, it'll be fine Thumbs Up

As has been said, just generally check the bike over Thumbs Up

I rode one of the 'legendary' ( Rolling Eyes ) 98 R1's last week. Im looking after it for a mate. Its a marlboro special edition or something.

It has 27k on the clock, and one of the biggest things I noticed was that the gearbox feeled very crunchy at the bottom end and sloppy at the top. It also has probs with the rev counter too.

I wasn't very impressed with the finish but it did seem in fairly good nick for a 9 year old bike. Plus its the first bike to make me swear out loud whilst riding it. Brutal acceleration!!

The '98 R1 can also, only string one sentence together.

And, that is;

SUFFER THE LITTLE CHILDREN

To be fair, a litre bike should be ok with double that mileage if looked after, from what I've observed on ebay and bike trader Smile

22000 miles on a litre bike should be nothing, however, it really depends on who has been riding it. Does the owner like to brag about his exploits on the road and on track days? Are the headstock bearings cattletrucked due to excessive wheelying? Has the gearbox been bollixed with endless clutchless changes? Are the front callipers knackered because it's a Yamaha and the owner took it out once when the roads were salty?
