Im currently in Leicester and I have just bought a Z550 in need of an MOT. I live in Bishop Auckland (approx 180 miles away) can I arrange an MOT over the phone at my usual garage at home and ride the bike from Leicester to my home town test station with no tax or MOT?

I think the law is that you can ride it from home to MOT station and back without Tax as long as you are only taking it to and from the MOT.

Could go to an MOT garage in Leicester and buy your tax in one of their post offices. Riding to a pre arranged MOT, I believe there is also something meaning that the garage has to be within a reasonable distance.

Or, you could live dangerously and just ride the thing home as it is!! Presume you'll have the new keepers slip in your pocket. Chances of getting stopped are pretty slim really, think how many miles people do each year, the majority of people never have any police attention.

hmm.

180 miles is a little extreme. To be honest I'd be more worried about reliability and safety before taking it on a really long ride. You don't want it to break down / try to kill you, especially when you're not legal.

If you do, make sure it is booked in at the garage and that they have the registration number written down. Then if the police do pull you they can phone up and confirm your story.

Personally I think that if you get stopped then the copper will take the view that you are taking the pi$$ by having it MOT'd 180 miles away and will probably book you for it. Why not make a sensible decision and just have it MOT'd in Leicester?

As far as the legality bit goes... you don't need a valid MOT to ride your bike to your local MOT station as long as you have the bike booked in (as stinkwheel said give them your reg. number) and you are riding it to the MOT station on the day that it is booked in, not the day before.

I believe this is regardless of distance needed to be covered.

As for the lack on tax... not sure about the legality... but you can't get tax until its MOTed anyway, as I'm sure you know!

You are ok to ride to an MOT garage without MOT or TAX as long as it is pre booked. You need to be insured whatever!

The test station must be as near as practicable to the place where the vehicle is setting off from so 180 is milking it juuuuuuust a tad.

As stated previously, make sure they take a not of your reg number at the MOT station.
A slip from a V5 document will not be an excuse i'm affraid, oldest trick in the book, the traffic cops will not be amused at that old chestnut.

You also need to take the most direct route there, no detours to visit someone or blast on your fave' roads.

Ok, the reason I want to take it to be MOT'd at home is I trust my home garage not to rip me off. However, my home is 180 miles from Leicester, so surely since I am allowed to take it to a local MOT station and then to home without tax or MOT even if i fails, could I take it to a garage in Leicester and if it fails still legally be allowed to ride it home?

I realise this might seem a little stupid but I have no garage, no spares and barely any tools here so if I have to do anything remotely difficult I wont be able to. Thumbs Up

You would not get away with an 180 mile trip if you were stopped. As must, as said, be the nearest station to you. And no if it failed you8 could not ride it 180 miles.

Bike MOT's are simple compared to car MOT's. Most of it is basic stuff relating to controll and safety. If it fails I wouldn't want to ride 180 miles home anyway.

Have you checked it over to see if there is anything it may fail on?

Get breakdown cover if you've not already got it. When you go to collect the bike just call them explaining how you've lost the keys or something similar, you and the bike will be taken home with no problems.

Errrr, a bike thats closer to home and isn't needing work doing might be a better buy then. Wink

Thats a fairly moot point since I have bought it.

As a last resort the breakdown cover sounds a good plan.

Theres nothing majorly wrong with the bike, It is a bit scruffy, the paintwork is tatty, and it needs replacement clocks, battery, and front tyre, (all of which i am currently sorting) other than that there doesnt appear to be much up with it thats not just basic servicing. I intend to sort it all out in the 2 weeks I have, but i dont want to get to the MOT station and have them fail it on some arsey minor faults because they are out to make money on repairs. I dont trust any garages round here not to do that as I have no experience with them. Confused
