Just a quick question really:

On my new R6 insurance policy (as with all) it is asking me how many miles I will do a year.

At the moment, I am hazarding only keeping the bike until August, and have put <2999 miles.

Firstly:

How would they keep track of your milage that has been done on the roads

What if you go over?

Thanks Smile

Nick.

I imagine if you go over and then try to claim for something, they won't pay out.

They don't have a way of checking up on how many miles you do apart from getting your mileage when you start your contract and then checking the amount *if/when* you make a claim.

Now that MOT's are electronic I'm sure they could check if they thought fraud was involved.

How'd they keep track of it, well there isn't any hard and fast way. Be realistic with your annual milage to them, as if your daily commute is 25 miles each way then it wouldn't take much for them to work out that you've done more than 3k miles in 12 months.

They could refer to MOT's and paperwork but that just shows the total milage the bike has done, and as your bike is often lent at weekends to friends who have 'TPO on other people's bikes' as part of their insurance.

Be slightly creative with it if you want but don't take the piss too much otherwise you might find problems in the event of a claim.

How much does insurance actually change by the mileage you put in ?
Whats the difference between putting 3000 and 10000 ?

The last time I was getting quotes I'm pretty certain it didn't change anything.

After turning 21 the annual mileage made no difference.. When I was 20, 6,000miles and 12,000 was a few hundred difference..

I asked this about the insurance on my car and they said anythin up to 10k miles is the same as 10k is a cars "average" yearly mileage. Anything over and the premium will start to go up.

A few years ago 8k was the average for bikes and anything below and up to shouldnt make a difference. Best to ask the insurer when it starts to load the premium.

Hi, with all my vehicles, I've told the insurance company "This is the occasional weekend toy, I use my other vehicles as my main use, but I may occasionally use it for commuting" and have <3k miles on all my vehicles (I do have three bikes and two cars though. Crying or Very sad )

The insurance company I worked for had no way of checking. Wink Thumbs Up

Often insurance companies will offer unlimited miles of for instance you go above 8000 miles per year. It made no difference for me because that's what Carole Nash said to me because i was uncertain about how many miles i would actually do.

Or i'm not suggesting this or anythign - just disconnect your speedo drive, use a cycle speedo and be done with it - low miles on a bike anybody? It's what i resorted to doing for a few years as the MOT man said he could only take measurements from the odo on the clocks and not from the cycle speedo, hence why MOT read 32000km for 2 consecutive years!

Sounds about right.

I'll check how much difference it makes, but I think from 8k to <3k it made £130 difference last time.

I think it's just because I'm 18 and the less miles I do, the less chance I have of smashing in to a range rover haha..

Nick, was this an online quote with Bennetts by any chance? Because i got a silly difference with quoting 4000 instead fo 6000 miles. But try other insurers. You're 18 and on an R6, it depends where you live and how long you've had your license, but if you live in a city or conurbation, be prepared to loobe up ya battyhole for mr insuranceman's piece.

I think the mileage thing suggests that because you're using it more per year, you're prolonging your risk exposure to mr Landrover or Mrs Milf in her XC90 or Mr Yob in his CorVa or whatever they drive. It's just statistics, and pretty silly. For all you know, you could exit the showroom with your new bike and get rear ended!

Thanks for the reply.

I've had some varying quotes for my R6 actuallly. Ranging from £2500 for bennets, to £491.36 with Motorcycle Direct. Obviously, I'm taking the second.

That one was the cheapest, and even Carole Nash (who I'm with at the moment) are quoting £750!

'Hazel' at MCD sorted me out good though :p haha!

I'm taking the policy out tomorrow, to start on 06/04/07 just so that the price doesn't change, and I get money 'ear-marked' as it were. I'll see how much difference it makes, but I'm not going to fill out the milage section of the V5 when I pick it up, so I could easily say I didn't do the quota.

Cheers for the replies so far!

Nick.

One the ins not i have just got my new policy on my bike which starts on the 15th at 10:00 and finishes on the 12th at 12:00....

Seems that they now think that a year is not from the same date as you start the policy..... This is via Bennets as they were the cheapest i found... Now not quite so impressed.

To explain my situation:

My 1st year's policy runs out on 06/04/07, and I will have 1 years no claims. I got a quote 1 week ago, for my 2nd year's insurance. Loads of places were quoting £700+ and Motorcycle direct quoted £491.

I phoned them up, checked everything was okay, and changed it to add the 'datatag' information to 'yes'. This recalculation of my policy took it sky high £800+ again! like all the others I guess.

However 'Hazel' at motorcycle direct spoke with her manager and has got it back to the £491.

That's with 1 years no claims, yeah Smile

I searched through the bike insurer .com i think
