Tomorrow, providing it's dry I'm taking out a yammy Fazer 600 from the local dealer to see if I like it over geeperz.

I was informed the excess was £500, which is steep..

..it's actually £750 because I'm under 21. Shocked

I know there's a fairly minimal chance I'll stack it, but if someone takes me out, I'd assume I'd initially pay the excess but be reimbursed?

also I noticed the bike is out of tax, where do I stand if I get pulled?

never had a test ride before you see....

Thanks
Simple

What do you mean: someone takes you out? Not sure on tax, maybe the dealer has some sort of trader policy, but usually it is the rider who is responsible if they ride an untaxed vehicle.

Then you could claim the full amount required from them.

Tax I'm not 100% sure about for a dealer; would have thought that you'd have to have trade plates on or something for it be 'ok', but really not sure on the details.

What G said, almost. If they put a trade plate on it you're OK, if they don't you're still OK cos you're not the registered keeper so you can't be done for no tax.

Re the excess, don't worry about it. Just ride carefully and switch your numpty radar on........ Very Happy

Erm, I believe the police can do you for not display a tax disc on the left hand side of the bike.

The DVLA will do you for not having a bike taxed or SORNd.

However you'd have to have a really harsh police person to actually do you if you explained it's a test drive. Don't think the fine's too bad (no points) and I reckon you get the bike shop to pay Smile.

it has a disc, it just ran out 17 days ago(as of tomorrow)...

I've seen bike cops(at bikesafe 2006) with 2 year out of date tax discs displayed. their replies were, I'm displaying one, not the correct one, that's back at my office, but I am taxed I assure you...

I work in a bike dealership. You have to have a trade plate on if the bike isn't taxed. Thumbs Up

Most coppers will just give you a producer if theres no tax disc on there and since you aren't the registered keeper it shouldnt be your problem.

Even with trade plates on the bike still needs to be taxed in the normal manner.

That excess is perfectly normal, in fact its quite low for an under 21 on a test rider.

As far as the tax issue, it's the responsibilty of the garage as a motor trader to make sure all vehicles have correct docs and are fully road legal. May be worth asking the garage, and if they say it's all good then it is their problem. Not many coppers will nab you at the roadside for not displaying a tax disc, they will if they find out you're not insured, they love that one!
