Hello thurr,

After doing my CBT on sunday my left elbow is having some trouble in the form of an aching pain...

Im 17 and regularly exercise, i was just wondering whether riding a bike could give you an RSI?

Any repetative movement you do too much of can leave you with Carpel Tunnel Syndrome/RSI

Some bikes have really 'buzzy' handlebars at high revs and long term exposure could lead to White finger. This can be toned down by weighted barends.

CBT is a lot of clutch work. You were probably using the muscles in away they aren't used to for a prolonged period of time. I was probably the same way after my CBT, I know I've been that way after distance riding.

It's nothing to worry about. The more you ride the more adapted your body will become to riding and eventually you'll forget all about it.

How tall are you? Do you regularly ride? It is common to get an RSI especially if you are in a cramped riding position for a prolonged period of time. cbt bikes are generally quite small hence why I ask your height.

I've had carpal tunnel from biking, plus when I picked up my new bike and then rode it up the country to uni, my left wrist was in absolute agony. I have no idea why, it's never happened before, and hasn't happened since, despite making the same journey 4 or 5 times.

All I remember about is from Health & Safety lectures before using machinery, so I wasn't paying as much attention as I could have been.

If I recall correctly it is perminent and progressive, so the condition gets worse. Prevention comes down to stopping using the machinery that causes it.

From what you've just said it seems you are getting more frequnetly then I'd be comfortable with if it were me. I suggest you see your Doctor and get your options outlined as soon as possible. Whitefinger can end up being debilitating.

Or possibly contact these people: Whitefinger - HAVS

how can it be 'repetitive' strain injury when you've just done your CBT? Confused

I just think you're being a big jessie.

I am being a big Jessie!!! Razz
i just had a thought on my mind sorry for asking a question n all Thumbs Down

and i used RSI because its the only term that i know for an injury of that kind, i spend most of my lessons at school on a computer so being in a elbows bent position happens alot hence repetitive Rolling Eyes Wink

After a return to biking after 20 years, a mate of mine had a very sore clutch arm, which passed after a week or two, now doesn't bother him. If it carries on, you should check your posture, and maybe get an experienced rider to look at your posture as well, to see if you are putting unnecessary strain on that arm.

I also get white fingers and toes but from Reynauld's, a circulation problem.

Not much I can do about it apart from not getting cold, but even with windproof undergloves and winter gloves on top I still get 3 dead fingers after half hour on the bike Sad
The odd thing is that just by having dead fingers totally affects my riding and balance.

I'll have to see about heated grips for next winter.

I remember when i first passed, and spending every waking moment out on the road for the following few days, my arms and shoulders were VERY sore for a little while getting used to the new strain... i'm not unfit at all, and it's not like they didn't get used or anything... it's just the whole them being in a way they are not used to... it will soon pass mate i'm sure, don't worry.

following a mountain bike smash 12 years ago I have permanent issues with both wrists. When I did the CDT and started riding I got terrible pains until my arms got used to riding. Swapping from the Divvy to the ZZR caused grief as well, but that may have been down to the 500 miles I did that weekend.

CBT is hard on the arms as it's a lot of fine and balanced control with your hands and as precise as possible moves with your arms. Once you get out onto the road then your body will adapt to riding.

If it’s vibration related and I see it was your CBT, I assume this was your first time riding a bike?

Its very common to be nervous about the bike and grip it hard with both hands, your arms and the rest of your body to go ridged. This will make any vibrations from the handlebars go through your arms.

If you relax your arms and body and grip the handlebars less powerfully, the vibration will be greatly reduced from the bike.

I got a lot of pain in my hand when I did my DAS, I think it was from reaching for the clutch lever when I wasn't used to it. I have quite small hands. But it got better with time. Thumbs Up

Then I bought the SV which has a longer reach for the clutch lever (it's not adjustable like it was on my GPZ) and I stopped riding for a few months as I am a wimp and it was winter - and now the pain is back! So for me I think it is just a strength thing, my hands need to get stronger (while I investigate options to shorten the reach to my clutch lever..... Confused ).

So probably the reverse of RSI, for me it's from not doing it enough!

Another idea if you get desperate, you can buy compression fabric that’s available from your local chemist. Its like a sock but open at both ends. Its normally used for sports injury support or other injury support.
