Hey all,
Went down to a bike show room today to have a look for my first bike. They had a brand new Yamaha YBR125 there for £2000, with free insurance.

What do you all think?

Next question - Is insurance likely to be expensive for a 19 year old, with zero NCB and zero riding experience, with CBT only, wanting to ride a YBR125? ;P

For a 125. At a guess you should be looking at around £100-200 even if you live in a bad area etc.
Also, is it a good idea to buy a brand new 125? Chances are you'll pick one up for much cheaper, not to mention growing out of it.

I wouldn't buy a YBR new simply because lots of poeple do what you do - go out and buy anew one, then in 6 months time get bored or do the DAS and sell it on - bought one for my girlfriend - 6 months old, 800 miles on the clock and like new, not a mark on it still with the protective plastic on it in places. Cost £1400 , could have got it lower but she really wanted the bike!

As said it really depends on what your insurance is likely to be. Phone a few companies and ask, the onling quotes are ok but it's always better talking to someone.

If they all come back and tell you it's £800 then your getting the brand new bike for £1200, sounds like a good deal to me.

PLus your going to get a warranty which could also be worth a few quid in the 'unlikely' event.

100 or 200 quid for a 125 TPFT for a 19 year old sounds like an amazingly low figure, I was 21 on a 125 and it was just under 400 notes for me.

Make sure some of your savings go into some good quality kit thats going to last too Thumbs Up

Yes, also agree with Villers. You will also get the warranty that could be worth alot compared to getting a second hand bike thats not been maintained or thrashed by a new rider.

I wish I was looking at that when I insured my YBR125 last year. I rang more insurance companies than I care to remember and the final offer I manged was £350. I was 24 with no previous penalties. Most were offering me £500-600.

Although I live in one of those bad areas you mention. So much so one company just laughed at me when I told them my postcode "we don't insure that postcode".

On to the original topic I think you should seriously consider looking for a good 2nd hand bike. I picked up my YBR for £1050, it was in supurb knick with 1770 miles on the clock and (picture in my profile was how it looked after I sold it 2500 miles later). And if you ring round the insurance companies you'll bring their price down.

Thanks

Tim

I got insured on an R6 at 19 with nearly everything against me for £900 ( & that is exspensive from some peoples quotes on here), so £800 for a 125 seems very steep.
Maybe look at a CG-125 aswell, heard there bullet proof.

Check the smallprint on your "free" insurance, you will probably find that the "free" element is TPO and if you want to upgrade to TPFT or fully comp they will charge you extra. If that's the case you need to factor that into your calculations too when working out if it's a good deal.

My YBR125 was bought from a Yamaha dealer at the bottom of my road for £2000 and they also sorted out my CBT and I got the free insurance deal. They even took me and my bike down to my CBT in a van and filled up the bike full with petrol. In my eyes it was worth it. The warrenty always makes you feel safe and there is the lack of MOT with a new bike. labour for service is free Thumbs Up .

Even though its 2k which is alot of money for a 125, if you keep it in good nick you can sell it on for about 1200ish.

Oh yeah and the YBR is an ace bike.

Agree with Matt above, Ok you spend the £2000 but you get the insurance, a new bike, RAC cover and you can sell it like me £1400. SO you don't in the grand scheme of things lose that much mate.

Great little bike go for it I would say! Thumbs Up

Lots of posts on the forum re this bike so have a search and dig some up

I reckon that "free insurance" will only apply to riders aged 21 years or older. Thumbs Up

speak to dalemac, he bought his ybr shiny and new, not sure if it came with insurance, but I'd of thought his insurance would be similar to yours..

for reference, I paid £764 tpft with three claims to my name on a 500 last year... came with full AA breakdown cover too, even the cushy 'we put you in a hotel' part.. never used it though Sad

A mate had a YBR with that deal.
Insurance wasn't completely free though, he had to pay £200 to upgrade to TPFT.
Had a free lid and CBT with it.
Fully comp for me is £405.32 (includes break down cover, court costs and a replacement bike), best quote so far not sure if I'll get any better.... will try =/

It would be worth checking whether you get any no claims during the free year, and how much it will cost once you actually have to start paying again.

I would consider a new CG125. You can get them for £1400 pre-reg and the insurance is lower.

Nah, that's often the case with the Ford Focus deals etc, but on a YBR when insurance is cheap anyway and it's mostly for 17 year olds, it would be worth less than nothing applying only to 21 year olds.
