What are the best tutorial methods? I'll be doing self learning, haven't the money for lessons.

I've got the guitar, i've got the tuner and everything equipment wise, just need to learn how to play, something to pass the day and I really want to learn how to play a particular song I love.

Thanks all.

I decided to learn the guitar, after a few weeks it got put in its case and under the bed, gives Mingles something to hide behind though. Just be warned it's slow going at first, do a search on google for 'learn guitar' plenty of sites that give learning schedules and stuff, just got to make sure you stick to them which I blatantly didn't. Sad

Well i've had my guitar for about 3 years and it is collecting dust in my bedroom at home. Decided to learn to play again.

Song I want to learn is "Green Day - Macy's Day Parade" sounds quite simple after listening to it a couple of times, i.e not too complex.

I taught myself mate, just takes patience and persistance.

Start by learning basic chords and changing between them smoothly and also different strumming patters etc.

Then try some single string work using the same chord shapes.

Not a green day fan myself so have never heard of that song, but when you're confident with changing chords nice and smooth look up the chords for the song on the net and drive everyone in your house insane as you play the same song over and over untill you can do it spot on!

I am trying to teach myself as well. Looks a lot easier than it is to be honest. I found this site to be really helpful, it has everything you need really. Good luck mate, you probably have a lot more patience than me Thumbs Up Laughing

Its all about the practise, which seems to escape me. Hence i'm still a pretty bad guitarist. Laughing

If i've got a specific song i'm after learning i generally try and find a tab site and give it a go. Real slow at first. Try https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/ for some tabs.

But check the ratings on them, as some people post pretty inaccurate tabs.

Also if i'm still a little stuck i'll have a look on you tube see if anyones posted a vid of them playing. That can be a big help sometimes as a page of numbers can get a bit confusing. Finger positioning can definitely aid fluid play.

Hope that helps, just keep trying Very Happy

I taught myself ages ago but never eally stuck at it (more interested in women!!) so Im no more than average.

I learned by picking something I liked, say an oasis song (cos most are simple at a basic level) and the reward you get from recognising what your doing is enough to spur you on.

Having a guitar you like is important as you need to want to pick it up.

Infact youve just inspired me to go play maceys day parade!!

Stick at it, try ebay for those 'Play *so and so* in 5 chords or whatever' books. At first you find it slow then it takes off!

Good luck Thumbs Up

Anyone who ever picked up a guitar before the mid-nineties learned "House of the Rising Sun" as their first song.

Anyone who ever picked up a guitar since the mid-nineties learned "Wonderwall" as their first song.

Except me... I learned "This is how it feels" by the Inspiral Carpets - I was an indie kid.

For basic playing, all I can say is learn the basic chords and keep playing. It's frustrating at first, but over time your fingers learn to fall into each chord and transfer between them without you even thinking about it. Think about how you once had to concentrate on every gear-change but now you don't even notice you're doing it... it's like that.

Once you've got to that stage you can start playing around the chords and doing more complex stuff. Unless you want to do pure lead... then just practice your scales.

I taught myself as an angry teenager with a Nirvana- Nevermind Tab book. as was said it takes time and patience, and some skinned red raw finger tips. I tried teaching a workmate but soon as he realised he wont be playing like hendrix in 2 weeks he gave up Rolling Eyes
