you'll get a gs500 for about 300quid
even if a gs has high milage she'll keep going,
no point in spending big money on a bike till you get your full licence,
you should get enough selling your xr to do your test and buy a cheap gs.
just my opinion, of course, but i have a gs as a commmuter, and ive spent the last year trying to kill it, and it just wont die,

Stinkwheels opinion is probably the most probable. On my GS125 I have to do rev right up to redline in every gear from 3rd to get to 60MPH. ____________________ Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it. I'll agree with JohnB and StinkWheel, my far more experienced mate (5 years a rider) rode my bike with me as pillion on a dual-carriageway and got it up to 62 mph. We each weigh 12.5st so plus gear that's gotta be getting on for 30st, he did say he really had to "use" each gear to it's maximum and maybe that's how he did it. 4 months later I just got mine up to 62 mph with only me on it on the way back to the dealers to trade it in, and in my opinion I felt like I was raggin' it! Abuse it... ____________________ My claim to fame: Austin Vince nicked my pen... |

When was the air filter last changed? Made a big difference on my GS125.
You really need to rag the fuck out of it to get it to 60. Don't be afraid to abuse it, it's what a 125 is for ____________________ Go back to bed - You have no rights - "Streetfighters ~ Mainstream motorcycling's crackwhore sister." |

I have a honda CLR 125. On level ground with no wind it'll sit between 60 and 65mph. Bit of down hill & tail wind add 5mph, the opposite then subtract 10mph.
It can be disappointing, but as has been said; you need to give some welly in the lower gears. 5th gear is like overdrive, no increase in speed there, just a gear to stick it in to stop the engine from exploding.
Try accelerating through 1st - 4th until your at the absolute max you think your going to get, then stick it in fifth.
I'm a svelte 13 stone, heh. |

i get into to 4th gear its doing 50mph and jus about doing 53mph... which is gay lol
from 1st gear ....to 20mph ...then 2nd gear to bout 30mph then 3 gear 40mph then 4th 50mph....
still gay |
chain: just make sure it's well oiled and not knackered
tyres: i put 40psi in for a long run on the road
your bike also sounds low geared, you could try a one tooth bigger front cog, but it might not pull it
do xr's have rev counters, max power is at 8500rpm, so ideally your top speed should be geared to those revs, not 10 or 11000
If it is undergeared like mine, thrashing the hell out of it would just be pointless, i just stick mine in 5th as soon as, it pulls around more or less the same anyway
i've got a thing called a rieju mrx125, which is a spanish yamaha engined 4 stroke trail bike, i presume all the little bikes of this sort will be very similar

that's my neck of the woods, he should have turned right through the fields past Carnaby, you can go off-road nearly all the way to Wetwang, a nice jaunt on a trail bike |

RS1Banger, sticking the tyres at 40psi would probably make them explode. The standard PSI for an XR125 is 23psi back AND front. Also it doesn't have a rev counter.
You seriously need to rev this bike to get it to go anywhere. 3rd gear rev it until it gets to 43-ish mph and then 4th gear you need to get it to 55mph before you go up into 5th for 60mph (and it will be SLOW to get there). You will not get continuous speed gains just by getting it to a certain amount of revs, you will have to hold it at the revs for a while to get the speeds I said THEN change. It is a slow bike, don't expect miracles! ____________________ :: Honda XR 125 L ('53) => Kawasaki GPZ 500S ('02) => Suzuki SV650S ('00) => Aprilia RSV-R ('51) :: |

XR = dirt bike
dirt bike = low gear ratio
low gear ratio = slow / wheelies
bigger front sprocket or new bike ____________________ meant to be restricted... aint |

Mine will do an indicated 65 on the level in neutral wind on stock gearing. I think the speedo is fairly accurate because at this speed I can pull away from HGVs. At this speed the bike is not at the rev limit but is right on peak power. Therefore, raising the gearing won't help much if it is stock. A long with all the other suggestions, make sure the valve clearences are OK and that the oil is the right viscosity. |
Sounds like its geared identical to the Honda CG125 (new model), the engines the same as well.
I calculated (no rev gauge) peak power in top gear (5th) was at 66mph or up to 4% faster.
I am 11 stone and about the same height as you. I assume the Honda CG125 has a bit less wind resistance, but its still a upright riding position.
I found the coat I wear makes a massive difference to top speed in 5th gear, of course head wind speed also makes a big difference.
To give you an idea, a textile coat in a decent head wind could slow the bike down to 50mph, put a leather coat on and I could get around 55mph in the same conditions. I have managed to get 66mph out of the bike with a leather coat easily when theirs no wind and on the flat. I have always backed off at that speed since I care about my engine and want a long life out of it. All the above speeds are normal riding position, no chin on the tank.
4th Gear appears to be geared to 56mph peak power. This gear seams to be powerful and can easily do 52mph against a gale force headwind with a leather coat.
So 5th gear seams to be a gear only any use when conditions are easy for the bike, 4th gear is when the going is hard, but theirs not much point trying to go past peak power since the power drops off dramatically. I thrashed a demo bike and got 60mph in 4th and changed up to 5th and had the same power at 60mph. |
