On our phone bill recently we had a 090.. number which was some premium £1 a minute rate thingy. This was recorded as a 20 minute phone call at a cost of £20 Shocked

None of us have used this number so we asked the telephone company about it and they said it could be some internet site charging us premium rate costs without us knowing.

(My flatmate has a laptop and dial-up modem and pays Telewest by the minute)

My question is....is it possible for an internet site to charge premium rates like this? Our usual internet bill shows the same 0845 ... etc number all the time, surely all internet connection charges would be through this?

It could be one of them adult sites which puts a program on your computer that you then connect to their server using one of these premium lines.

It does mean your flat mate would have to disconnect and connect through their program though.

Thats the only think I can think off.

I used to work for Telewest and we got this all the time. When you get onto one of these sites they don't bother telling you that they're charging premium rates. They're right rip off merchants!

Hmmnn. A friend of mine had this problem at his house. Despite all his promises to the contrary it turned out to be his little brother who had rung the line, presumably to bang one out Laughing

Its possible someone has rung the line but is lieing to cover it up. Either hire Poirot or steal a lie detector Laughing

I had this in my student house as well.

Some of the very dodgy sites actually close your connection and dial their own number.

Hi

Our neighbours son got caught out with this one. Dodgy sites downloading dialers which use alternative connection numbers with an extortionate rate.

Might be worth trying to get these numbers blocked.

All the best

Keith

Oh yes, that is fun to get him with. If we feal really cruel we dig out some of the sites he has visited, or look through the cache.

All the best
