My ZX7R has been off the road for the last 6 months. The snow finally disappeared on Saturday so i thought i'd get the bike fired up and take it for an mot.

I've drained the fuel from the carbs and tank. Removed the plugs and turned the engine over to throw out any stale fuel. Changed the oil. Changed the plugs. Filled up with fresh fuel and turned her over but she won't fire up. The battery still has loads of life in it. I've removed the plugs again and they seem to be dry.

What's the next logical step? Should i strip down the carbs? They seemed to be fairly gunk free when i gave them a quick inspection but they have been full of stale fuel for 6months.

did you turn the fuel tap back on? Dry plugs indicate no fuel getting to cylinders so check fuel system first.

Yeah i did. What i meant by 'dry plugs' is that the bike didn't appear to be flooded. After 15minutes of trying to start it then they were wet through with fuel but to begine with they were fine.

Is it definitely sparking, or can you give the battery a wee boost by jump starting it?

Ran out of fuel on my 500 and had tried to start it for a while, before I reaslised what was wrong. Embarassed When I filled it up it was turning over fine but just not catching, hooked it up to a car and it started just fine and has been no probs since then.

Try a little fuel down the plug holes if the worst comes to worst. Should tickle it into life. Not sure it's something I'd like to try on a 7r though.

Or open up the air box, take out the filter and spray EZ-start in there, whilst cranking it over.

I'd also suggest leaving it for a couple of days aswell. After I replaced the head on my XJ600 it wouldn't start after we rebuilt it. We lost a lot of faith. One day I went out, turned the ignition on, hit the button and BAM, life.

Confused If its getting a spark and fuel, then surely the only other thing could be is timing, or at a very long shot; lack of air...but if you've had the plugs out you've had the airbox off, you'd have notcied if a family of field mice had set up home.

Or as Gaz says, leave it for a couple of days....

I tried this also.
I might leave it for a few days then try another new set of plugs.

Any other suggestions???

Hold the throttle open fully and turn it over, that will help clear it if its flooded. Then start all over again.

Any chance you connected the leads back up in wrong order?

Hey,

When you put the bike away for the 6 months did you drain the old fuel out off your carbs?
I know u said u drained the old fuel when u came to start it, which lead me to belive you left fuel in there when it was put away.

The problem is old fuel does nasty things to carb internals, mainly coating them in a nice varnish. If you left old fuel in there i would take a guess at a blockage.

When i came to start my 400 after lying it up for a year the carbs where blocked solid with old varnishy, gunky, fuel. Only after a good clean out would the bike run again.

Cheers,
Shaun.

With the fuel tap turned off i presume?

I did leave fuel in the carbs but they looked clean when i had them off. I didn't check the jets though so i guess the a blockage could be lurking somewhere. Maybe i should strip and clean them properly.

oh and i did check the leads were round the right way Thumbs Up

Makes no difference, I never do. Same principal with a bike, car or any engine that has flooded.
