i usually use a 180 rear tyre, im tempted by some cheap 190s

i know the handling may get a bit more sluggish, but generally is it ok to fit a 190 tyre to a bike that usually has a 180 ?

Cant really see an advantage. Turn in will be slower, will need to lean more as a result, which may not work with your particular bike very well. Also aquaplaning may become a problem in the wet Laughing
May also cause clearence problems with swingarm/hugger/underside of bike.

Cant really see it giving enough extra contact patch to offset the downsides.

Why are you considering it? Been offered part worn 190's cheap? Wink

very cheap indeed

at a price where if they dont work out, it might not even matter

there is the hassle of picking them up

you have made me reduce what im willing to pay though, due to the downsides you mention

are 190's usually fitted to litre bikes or something ?

More often than not, due to generally having more power to put down, thus requiring a greater contact patch.
I'd assume the bikes are designed with this in mind though. Dont think its a great idea on a 600 but somebody will undoubtedly be along shortly to give a comprehensive and fact filled answer and educate us both Laughing

Don't see the point tbh, just like why does the Hornet 600 have a 180 section rear, when a 160 would be good enough?

You will get slightly increased grip while getting on the power hard coming out of a corner at the expense of a bit slower steering.

This has long been a topic of debate for the litre bike classes that allow free choice of tyre sizes.

Well I've recently been fitted with a 180 rear tyre for my bandit, which normally takes a 170 I believe?

Long story but it was a part-worn tyre but the fitting and the tyre itself were both free thanks to a mate of mine which works in the garage, so as they say don't look a gift horse in the mouth!

Steering to me feels better, takes a bit more effort to get it down into the corners but it feels a lot more stable. Though that could just be me getting used to the bandit - I haven't had it too long.

When I got my bike serviced, they recommended that a 180 instead of a 190 would be better for reasons mentioned above, quicker turn in etc.

May get one when I next have a change.

because it looks so damn cool Razz besides, the hornet is still a quick steering bike, it doesn't have any adverse affect in that regard.

my bike came with 180 so when the time came i changed to 190. to me it feels better, it is a smidge slower to turn but you'd be pressed to notice it. oh and it looks good too.

Will a 190 tyre fit okay without fouling the swingarm etc?

I do remember, ages ago MCN undercover man found out that a major jap manufacturer released a 600 with a 180 tyre even though it performed better in every way with a 170, but they figured it'd fail to sell on kudos points. He never did say which one though.
