Hi guys,

Got my MOT at the weekend, just wondering:

1) Will forks that just smear the stantion (IE: No running oil, just a little ring of residue on the forks when they're dirty) fail?

2) My indicators seems to flash a bit faster than usual (I have no idea why) and the indicator light on the dashboard decides when it wants to work, will this fail?

Hi, In my recent experience any "oil rings" on the fork stanction will result in a fail, does it leave one every time you pump the forks? If not just make sure you wipe them before the test.

An indicator repeater is also an MOT requirement. Somewhere there is a spec for flashing requirements, when I took my RD last weekend I.m sure saw him cout the flashes in a given time period.

You don't need a repeater light if you can see the flashers when you're sat on the bike. If it is fitted, it has to work so stick a bit of tape over it. The flashers can go at up to 120 flashes/min.

Fork gaitors on a road bike are a bad plan if you plan to sell. The only reason 99% of people fit them is to conceal knackered stanctions or seals, and everyone knows that.

Tiewrap the buggers in position then! The MOT inspector cannot do any dismantling for inspection, and as long as he can't hear oil squelching under them (he'll give them a good feel against the fork leg) you should be ok.

If you just want to get it through an MOT, just use plastic binbags and cable ties. Takes all of 5 minutes to fit, works just as well as "proper" rubber gaiters which slide down the stanchion, and will prevent the MOT tester from looking at your oily stanchions. Then you can cut them straight off when you get home (though I personally think they look fine and last ages, so would keep them on.)

Take the fork dust seals off. Wad some kitchen roll over where the seals are. Replace fork dust seals.

Last year when putting my 125S through MOT - the day before test I fitted new front brake pads and generally tightened up everthing on the bike.

The morning of the test I discovered one of the fork leg drainbolts had decided to leak... badly, gear oil all over the rim and tyre, stank bad as well, by loosening and redoing that bolt the day before the copper washer must have disorted/shifted, anyway no spare washer to hand I drained the forks and washed the wheel etc, rode it the three miles to test centre and it sailed through test, added the cost of 2 new copper washers to invoice for test and he just smiled - I'm not recommending you do this on a modern bike but I had no qualms about doing it.

Just fit new fork seals before your MOT.

You then don't have any risk, worry, or unnecessary expense.

It depends on the tester...

The official guide line is...

Oil leakage is a Fail.

Oil misting of the stantion is an Advise.
