Was charging the battery for one of our bikes and must have had the charging settings too high as when I went to look at it the fluid was bubbling quite a bit. There was a funny smell as well.

What's happened here? Is the battery knackered? I haven't tried it back in the bike yet.

Batteries do bubble when being charged and the gas they give off is hydrogen (VERY explosive). As long as the electrolyte is above the plates there shouldn't be a problem. But if it drops below they will warp and cause dead cells eventually as they will short out. Just keep an eye on it . . . Also make sure it doesn't get too hot.

You'll probably get away with it as long as it didn't get so hot that the plates in the battery warped.
