If it's off the road and not taxed, you have to declare that - Statutory Off Road Notification. You get the form with each years road tax reminder.

Doubt there's anything you can do.

Yes, unfortunatley if you are not paying road fund tax because your bike/car is off the road you have to declare it. It is called SORN declaration. (statutory off-road notification). I think the fine usually depends on the amount of time the vehicle has spent off the road.

If it is off the road and not taxed then you are supposed to declare it SORN. I'm not sure what you can do though. I can tell you that the DVLA's records are in a complete state at the moment, a police friend has told me. If you can work out some sort of argument that suggests that it's there fault because they have misplaced a document/letter then you may get away with it.

"But I sent it to you in plenty of time! Why I am I being penalised for you losing my SORN declaration?" - Might get you off the hook.

I bought my last car with no tax and had to wait for my log book to come back before I could get it. After I taxed the car the DVLA picked up on the missing month and told me I could pay OR fill in a SORN and that was after the fact! Surely they'll let you fill one in now to let them know when it was off road?!

I got one of those for my car that has been under SORN for bout 2 years.

I got a letter saying that i owed £25 fine for not renewing.

I wrote back to them saying that id have no promlem paying, if, they could explain why i never got a reminder to say it was about up, when i was told that i would get a reminder. and why they waited 2 months before telling me it was over due.

The DVLA wrote back and said that i didnt have to pay due to the circumstances.

Cool

why should you pay road tax if the bike is not being used on the road?!?!?!?

unless of course the bike/vehicle is being kept unused on the public roads?

i think its another scam to get more money out of us.

You don't have to pay road tax if your bike isn't on the road but you must declare the fact that your bike is off the road. Its probably just an another way to keep track of people who are using their bikes on the road without paying road tax.

Hi

Sorn is a pain in the a**e. I cannot see why they need you to declare your bike is off the road every year. After all, what is the purpose? So if they see you riding it on the road they can take you to court, just like they could before if the vehicle wasn't taxed.

All the best

Keith
