Hope someone can help me here.
Having problems with the electric start crapping out on my Piaggio NRG DT.

Recently derestricted it, and I have problems starting it via electric but no problems with the kick start (thank God for the kick starts - much more reliable Very Happy).
Anyway, here's the symptoms:
When I try and start it, sometimes it will just try and start, but nothing, and sometimes it will start up, look like its ready to go, then just die out again, and sometimes it will start up alright, and when I rev it, it will rev high for a few secs then go back to normal revs.

When it's been warmed up and ridden somewhere, when I go to start it again it'll start fine, first time.

A few thoughts I had on what it could be?
Found a bit of oil and a bit of black sludge crap on my spark plug?
Battery?

Another thought I had, was maybe it was the starter-engine-turner-thingy next to the variator may be jammed or something?

Oh and it's a new bike that I derestricted, if it makes a difference Smile

Any help from the pro's to a noob will be appreciated Very Happy

Sounds like your battery is shagged to me.

How would I test the battery? With a multi meter?

Never mind, I tested the battery and its levels are fine and its reading around 12.5, so I don't think its the battery.
Any ideas what else it could be?

Still would say the battery, test it after it has been standing all night to see if it is holding its charge.

You need to test the battery whilst it's got some load on it. Just reading a voltage means nothing.

You need something across the battery drawing some current, like a big ass heater or something. (Not just a bulb).

Then see if it still reads 12v!

Should I test it while the engines running?
Should it still read 12V when its running?
I tested it again this morning and it was 12.4V so yeah...

It should read higher when it's running. Around 14v as it's charging. It may not be charging on idle though. And I realise it's difficult to test the voltage on a twist-n-go on anything other than idle... Laughing

Try giving the battery a good charge, or hooking up a set of jump leads. See if the starter works then. One way to either prove or disprove the theory of the knackered battery.
