I've been getting heart palpitations Shocked

Feels like me old ticker skips a beat then has a bit of a big beat. Reading a bit about it on the net and it appears that they are quite common and on the whole nothing to worry about.

However, the bits I've read say go see your doctor if they are frequent. I have maybe a couple a day - do you think that's frequent enough to go see the quack? Being a typical bloke I hardly ever go to the Doc's. I've been having them for quite a while but just didn't really give them a second thought.

I'm also trying to get into the Fire Service so I'd like this not to go into my notes Confused

When I'm stressed/tired/worried/not eating right/not getting enough sleep I get palpitations quite frequently (up to 5 a day Shocked Confused )

Got told to cut out the coffee, try and reduce my stress levels, improve my diet and get more regular excercise.

If you're getting 2/3 a day and it's enough for you to ask on an internet forum for help, I think a visit to the doctors is in order just to make sure everything's ok Thumbs Up

Yep, just pop along to the doc's.
Quick listen to the old ticker, and most likely he'll (she'll) arrange for an ECG.

Job's a good 'un.

Put your mind at rest in any case. Thumbs Up

I sometimes experience these but only usually after over-indulging on the good life on a weekend Wink But having them everyday sounds like a trip to the docs is a sensible move, get them checked out, peace of mind if nothing else.

As the others on here have already said go and see a doctor to get it checked out, after all if your bike kept misfiring you would check it out wouldn't you ?, the fire brigade won't worry about it being on your doc's, they will give you a stringent medical anyway.

I get them now and then, usually when I get out a hot bath.

However I dont get them on a daily basis even though I'm stressed to buggery, get little sleep and have a totally shite diet!

Joe... Your just getting old Wink

I used to get them frequently but they have calmed down now and I only get a couple a month. I was told if it lasts for more than a couple of minutes then to get help but mine are always back to normal within 2 minutes but I do feel like im going to pass out and have to sit down until it returns to normal. Horrible feeling, but I never had any until I was pregnant with my first child.

Think the caffeen & red wine thing is a big factor for this.

I myslef have had this problem. I cut my tea & red wine intake by 50% - it took a few months, but my palpitations went away.

I cant be arse to write long winded posts, so here goes the short version....

...shut up you big girls blouse, everyone gets palpitations or skipped beats or the technical term 'ectopic beats'.

Some people are more aware of them than others, or just more aware than normal when stressed, too much caffeine, due to smoking or during / after exercise.

IF, and only IF they continue and wont stop and your pulse is belting along, then you may be in SVT or a tachyarrhythmia.

It wont be detected when completing the firemans exam and physical, and certainly wont hinder you in any ways Wink

As said just cut out the stimulant stuff including sports drinks.

Hormones Wink

Its not uncommon for pregnant women to experience palpitations or flutterings in the chest.

Ectopics cant be found a lot of the time as they are infrequent and may not be present in the short examination.

An ECG will show ectopic beats, but if I see them, I'll just ignore it and file them in the notes.

Ectopics need to be put into context, as I said, they are perfectly 'normal' and harmless.

As others have said, I've had these two on occasions. Like a squashing feeling of the heart.
I'm relatively fit and healthy but I find I might get one in the morning after a couple of days bad sleep and a cup of coffee.
I don't think it's anything that ominous.
If you really can't be arsed to go to the doctor then make sure you simply look after yourself, get a lot of sleep and cut out the booze for a week.
If you still get them after that then you should go to a doctor!
