Right, I want to get a heart rate monitor watch. Need a female fit one obviously Wink Am looking to start exercising pretty seriously over the next few months, and wanna make sure I'm not going at it too hard.

Need to know if there are any that can monitor your HR without a chest strap? If so, what make/where can I get them/how much??

Would also like to know basics about them (can I wear the strap all the time whilst at work or is it "dangerous" etc?)

Any recommendations?

Thanks Cool Thumbs Up

As far as I know they only work with a chest strap. It would be no problem to wear it all day, although it may get a bit uncomfortable after a while! They are eay to get on and off as they have little click releases on the side!

Off the top of my head, Nike, Polar and Sunnto.

I've used a nike one before, they are very effective, though mine did have a chest strap. Can I ask why you dont want one? You'll find the one without wont be as accurate even though they claim to be.
Fot something accurate and strapless your looking at £££. HTH.

just read your post properly this time!! They work by means of a sensor based device in the strap which transmits the data via infa red to the watch, you can use them all day or as you please!

Your skin needs to be moist under the strap, you could use a gel but just licking it works fine! Especially if you are about to work out as you will sweat and the link will be good!

Can't really see the point of them. You know how hard your training by how you feel. Why do you need a monitor to tell you you're not working hard enough.

So if you have a high heart rate and are following a exercise plan, you can see if you are reducing your HR as part of the fitness programme.
Some people fall for the gimmick aswell but they do the job.

It'll only be one day every month. I want to see how my training and exercise is effecting my heart rate at work Thumbs Up For instance, when I have to move 20-50 boxes up 2 flights of stairs Laughing

What are you both talking about? It's no gimmick. In order for maximum weight loss you have to keep your heartrate at a specific rate during a workout. If its too low or too high you won't lose weight efficiently.

Rubbish. Good diet, High intensity interval training, and an active sport on the side will see you burning fat in no time. Top it off with an eca stack maybe a course of clen and you'll have less fat than a brussel sprout.

The best way to tell if you are excercising in the correct zone for your body, is to wear a HRM Thumbs Up

Tell's you what the "ideal" heart rate is to burn the most fat etc.

What Confused

A heart rate monitor will show you how fast your heart is beating.

Burning fat doesnt happen in a particular 'zone'. Simply the harder you work, the more energy you will use. that energy is stored in the body as fat.

If you are very fit you will have a low heart rate. Still takes the same amount of energy to perform a task as it would an unfit person's whose heart rate would be far higher.

I do see its use as a training tool but personally, i'd just measure my fitness by my performance. For example, i used to run 3 miles and be knackered, now I can do 5 or 6 and barely be out of breath.
I got fitter, dont need a hrm to tell me that.

Actually weight loss does happen in a specific 'zone' as you put it.

If you want to lose maximum weight you have to keep your heartrate lower than maximum as your body won't start losing fat efficiently. If you are really into muscle gain then over exercising your heart and doing anerobic exercise is good for that, but if weight loss is your goal don't get your heartrate too high.

Nope, but I'm sure most sprinters didn't start off overweight, but if they did I'm sure they exercised in the most efficient way to lose it in the first place then once they were at their ideal weight they would have trained for strength and stamina!

I'm not saying you don't lose weight by exercising hard, you do, but just not as effieciently as exercising at about 70% of your maximum heart rate.

If you are not over weight or maximum weight loss is not your goal then exercise as you like!!

You can also get to know when your body is coming down with colds etc. when you monitor your heart rate and know it's normal patterns. This can be quite important.

A lower heart rate doesn't always relate directly to fitness, there are other more important measures like VO2 Max.

What is scary is how low the resting heart rates of cyclists can be. Michael Indurain used to be 28bpm.

I have to be honest though, the fad of wearing a moniter soon wore off Laughing
