I've been lifting weights regularly for a few months now, and while my strength has increased, and I look more built, I've gained practically no weight, and I started off very slim. I just wondered if anyone has had experience with those protein and nutrient milkshake powders, and if they help much. I have been trying to eat the right stuff, ie. lots of meat and eggs and stuff with protein.

Oh yeah, and for all you fatties wanting to lose weight, lifting weights burns many more calories than running, and is less likely to make people shout "got your number" at you...

Ignore Luke, he's a silly girl. Laughing

Weight training may burn more calories than cardio workouts, but it only burns fat in the areas that you're training, i.e. your arms, legs etc. In order to reduce our bellies, cardio/aerobic excercise would be better.

Also, cardio workouts are generally better to improve overall fitness, and much healthier for your heart. Weights put on a lot of strain on the heart and arteries, which is why a lot of dedicated bodybuilders/strong people can suffer from heart disease in the future.

you could try some protein, createne or crash weight gain (which i think has lots of protein in)
try www.sncdirect.com for the suplements or mens health (mag or web site) for advice, they tend to do lots of bodybuilding stuff!

started weight training recently myself, realised in order to put on some real bulk i would have to eat more than i can physically in my current basic training situation, three squares a day doesnt cut it as what you need

putting on weight and turning it into muscle isnt as easy as it sounds Razz

i lost a lot of weight in basic training, not dangerously, but just slimmed down a lot, all weight training is doing to me is toning, cos i cant eat it as quick as im burning it off, result isnt bad, just dont wanna lose anymore weight

Well if you are small to begin with you have to be realistic to the amount of muscle you can put on healthily. You should stick to foods like pasta rice chicken etc etc protein and carbohydrates. Be careful of you're health and watch out for sprains and strains!

I think I'll just stick to doing what I'm doing, it is working, gradually, when I get to uni I'll most likely have lots of spare time to spend in their really good gym, and not my weights bench in the shed...

I used to be very thin due to the type of workouts/exercise I used to do.

Now my training has changed I have put on weight - more than I really like but its still on.

Basically to bulk up (if you will) you need to do heavy weights and not as many reps, light weights with lots of reps tone.

I've never been one for these additives etc, I find greasy chips help my gain weight just fine.

Your physical size can only change so much to be honest - I have my father shoulders and mothers legs - so no matter what I do with my legs they are always going to be thin.

Basically I wouldn't worry about your size/shape etc. Train how you want to train and you don't have to be big to be strong.

HEX is sort of right - I played professional rugby for a while and moved from wing to prop (not an easy task).

There are a few things you need to do to gain mass.
Firstly east protein but in your food NOT in a shake/pill. Lots of eggs, meat and pulses (beans mainly). Because you generally get fat in protein rich foods (just coincidence), you have to train on some nights in a purely cardio-vascular way. Running, cycling, rowing, it doesn't matter as long as you work your lungs and heart & get the blood flowing.

Then make sure you lift large weights with fewer reps (as HEX said) to build bulk. If you usually bench press a weedy 5kg but do 300 reps, work the weight up over time and work the reps down with it until you are lifting a weight where 10 reps and 3 sets is getting to feel like you have done something WITHOUT HURTING.

Keep at this level until you don't feel that 'burn' at the end of the third set, then add a few k's until you feel it again.

Make sure you keep up with cardio-vascular exercise and situps all the time though as otherwise you get bigger but get no definition, a large, hard, round stomach and your hearth will pack in very much sooner than it needs to have done.

Ok unless you're going in for body building competitions then this is what you want to be doing.

Foodwise: Eat anything that's in front of you, within reason of course. Just maintain a stable diet, don't cut things out because they aren't protein rich or anything like that, and don't go especially out of your way to only eat protein rich foods. A normal diet has more than enough protein, carbohydrates, and vitamins in for what you need, and it doesn't feel like a chore sorting out what you are and aren't allowed to eat.

Secondly, join a gym if you aren't already a member. In the gym if you want to be all-round physically fit then go for a combination of cardiovascular work, and weight-training. If you wanna be able to run like a Kenyan in the Olympics, then concentrate solely on cardiovascular, and if you wanna be strong, don't do any cardiovascular and just do weights.

From what you've wrote (I scan read...) I take it you want to be physically strong. The best way to do this is a pyramid training programme. You need to sort out your 1 max reps for each machine for a start. Go round each machine in the gym and lift as much weight as is physically possible for you. Write all these figures down. You then work out 50% of your 1 max rep, and do 10 reps at this weight. Then you do 8 reps at 60% of your 1 max rep, and finally 6 reps at 70% of your 1 max rep. This is THE way to bodybuild. You can sit there all day long and do 1000 reps at a really low weight if you want, but all it will do is make the muscle work, but it won't grow because it is not under any pressure. By the same token, doing one rep at as much as you can won't do you any favours, it will just end up ripping your muscles.

Unless you want to be an all-rounder (physically fit and strong) then you CANNOT mix cardiovascular and weight-training. It just doesn't work. You need fat to turn it into muscle. If you are doing cardiovascular work, it burns off fat. Simple as.

Forgot to mention, if this isn't working well enough then don't change your diet at all, just start on Weight Gain drinks. You will soon find that you gain more weight because muscle weighs a lot more than fat. Ever wondered why the World's Strongest Men candidates weight about 1 1/2 times what an equally sized fat bastard weighs?

Oh dear scooby, I'm 17 stone ans used to be 12 - trust me you need to do cario work as well or your heart will pack in and you will NOT be able to carry yhe extra weigh you have put on. The strain on your heart will be too much. It is a myth that fat converts to muscle. Fat burning and muscle building are two seperate processes. Your body will never turn one to the other. A muscle gets bigger by the ammout of work being done, causing the blood flow to increase and hence 'feed' the muscle fibres and let them bloat up. This is why when you stop training you go loose NOT fat. The muscle looses the blood flow you used to force through it and it relaxes. Fat cells can never be lost unless you have liposuction they only get bigger or smaller. Muscle needs protein (and the borken down form or protein called Amino Acid) to grow. You also however can work too hard and creat too much Lactic acid which will in turn damage the muscle. Pyramid training is an old standard used by bodybuilders who want to go into competition and ensure they get a workout which defines and builds without having to waste time on cardio work. It is not a healthy way to train in the long term and your blood flow stays the same and the level of oxygen in your blood will also not change. The increased muscle mass HAS to get more oxygen to restric the build up of lactic acid (caused by the body burning protein alone instead of oxygen and protein). You do not need to do cardio work on the same workout as weights but you must include it somewhere in your week.

An example of what I did was:

Monday, 5 mile run in the morning and a Milk and raw egg/glucose shake. Weights in the evening.

Tuesday, Just the run and shake

Wednesday and thursday REST - VERY IMPORTANT

Friday, Run and shake morning, Rugby training evening

Saturday Training all day - 8 until 4

Sunday played a match

Along with this, I also ate a larger quantity of meat products but did not cut anything else down. If anything, I ate more vegetables and carbs to allow my body to be fuels and repaired as it needs.

Make sure you also drink plenty of water (2 litres a day minimum)

This was set up by David Lloyd who was originally the England Rugby coach and now owns the David Lloyd chain of fitness centres (he assistant coached at Leigh rugby when I played there).

Well that's what I've been told by the physio at the gym I go to anyway, and it's worked for my mate's brother. He used to weigh just 11 stone, and now weighs 18 stone, and it's all muscle. He has only been training for 18 months, 7 stone in 18 months is a lot. All he has basically done is eaten loads of good foods, but hasn't cut out fatty foods altogether, just eats a 'normal' amount. Admittedly, he was on weight gain for about 3 months of this training, and has been on creatine for the whole time, but at the end of the day how much you train is very important. He trains 6 times a week, Monday to Saturday for 3 hours a day. Sunday is a rest day. He does purely weight-training. Your body gets used to the training you do and you get used to training for 3 hours a day and having one day of rest. At this level I don't see how you need to do cardiovascular work because when you are doing weight-training it's not as if you're not doing exercise.

I get what you are saying Scoobs mate but when it boild down to it, he has build his muscle a very large amount in a very short time, a speed I believe to be unhealthy. The extra strain on his heart in such a short time will eventually weaken it. All he has to do is cut out a day's training on the weights and run/cycle/row etc for the same time and he will be working his heart and lungs to allow them to feed more blood around his system. The heart is a muscle too - ou can not work every muscle in your body and expect your heart to keep up without letting it work out too.

I personally would let the weight gain take a little longer and be healthy than see a result yesterday and die of a heart attack at 40!!!
