Vtwins have more toruque but inline has more power at higher revs..
Korns bein a V4 has 2 cyclinders oposite each other, best of both worlds. |
Not quite true. Torque is affected by the length of the stroke (ie, the longer the stroke the greater the leaverage on the crank as the piston goes down), and a 2 cylinder engine of the same capacity as a 4 will have a longer stroke and a larger bore.
However, power is torque x rpm, and a longer stroke engine cannot rev as high so is not going to make enough extra torque to compensate for the lower revs to give higher power.
The engine configuration has no effect of the torque characteristics of an engine. It does affect the firing order, which makes it feel different, and it also affects whether the engine needs a balance shaft to feel smooth. A 90 degree V twin is perfectly balanced, when running on a single crank pin. To smooth out different angle V twins you can run 2 crank pins, one for each con rod / cylinder but that means you land up with a wider engine, which looses one advantage of a V twin. You can also run a balance shaft but that will absorb power (but if the lack of vibration means you can lighten the engine alot without it shaking to bits, you may well gain that power back)
All thebest
