i was making my way home today when i noticed every time i shifted up it got harder and harder. after a few more minutes it was stuck in first gear. it took me ages to get home as its only a 125. any who i switched the oil and i can now switch gears normally, but only when the engine isn't on. I'm still quite new to all this biking stuff and I'm at a complete lost. any feedback would be great.

Sounds like your clutch needs adjusting.

What bike is it?

Check your clutch cable hasn't stretched, it could be stopping the clutch from disengaging making it hard to shift gear.

it's a lifan (chinese import)

iv tried adjusting the clutch cable, but it didn't make any difference.

what i don't get is why it works normally when the engine is off, but soon as it on it stiffens up on me?

Have you dropped the bike?
If you have you might have bent the gear lever shaft.

The clutch appears to be dragging making it hard to change gear when the engine is running. Try to adjust the clutch lever so it bites when its almost all the way out. It should go into gear then when the lever is pulled in fully.

Surprisingly yes. How good that warranty is depends on how close you live to the dealer etc etc.
