In one word. No.

You do not have a tax disc displayed therefore you are not permitted to ride/drive.

Shit innit!

The offence is 'failing to display' a tax disc, not one of not having it in the first place. So, in short, you'd be committing an offence if you rode/parked on a public road without a tax disc.

Having said that, I've never displayed mine. Laughing I've had loads stolen from the scoot, so it doesn't now even have a holder for it. The Ducati has an empty holder where the tax disc should be, but isn't.

The coppers wouldn't rely on a tax disc anyway, as they're easy to forge and on bikes, get so dirty, you can't see the reg anyway. They'll put your licence plate in the computer and get told immediately that your bike is, indeed, taxed. So, I wouldn't worry about it, you've paid and that's the main thing.

If you can tax your vehicle on line it means the police can also check on line that you have tax, insurance and MOT. So I think you would be OK.

I'm currently driving round in a car not displaying any tax because I'm waiting for the tax. Even got pulled over, copper said "Where's the tax" said I bought it online, he was just like "Fair enough"... Depends alot on the copper I think.
