Iv just bought a ZX6R J2 and I was just wondering how easy it is to get your knee down cornering etc..
I use to have a Bandit 400 therefore no need to be getting the knee down really, I only ask because when I took the ninja out for a test ride I was a little twitchy going round bends.

I take it thats its all about your confidence and trust in the bike, its been a while since iv had a bike and im sure after a few weeks my road confidence will be back, but as I say, iv never leaned a bike down properly...

Any suggestions chaps ??

Confused

It hurts less if you take a file to your sliders...

The trouble with trying to get your knee down is that you will be so busy clambering all over your bike that you may well hit a car or a kerb through lack of concentration... Its just not necessary on the road - but then again neither are biles full stop so that blows my argument out of the cocked hat! lol

If you replicate your attempt to leave Squires then i'm sure you'll get it down quickly.

Use the search thingey, there are millions of threads on it. The general concensus is find a quiet roundabout, go round and round and hang off like a gibbon and look where you want to go.

Sorry - my poor tiping again...

Bikes are like coke - expensive, potentally dangerous and a form of pleasure that leaves you wanting more... but not necessary to sustain life... that's all I meant!

Yeah! Forget about getting your knee down and learn to ride safely, then develop the skills to make good progress on the road, then think about a track day where you may need to try getting your knee down.

It took me around 4months of concentrated practice on local roundabouts, reading stuff on body positioning, throttle control, counter steering etc until I eventually 'touched down' last week.

I was very chuffed Very Happy

I did, however, then bin my bike on monday doing the same thing with the left knee. Too cocky too soon. Learnt my lesson now though.

Just keep practising, it is worth it. If you're the sort of rider who checks people's chicken strips and sliders as a matter of course (and I know I am), then the feeling you've joined the club is great.

To all those who say its dangerous and unnecessary, and deride your foolishness, I say 'Pah!', at least you have the balls to try. Good luck. Thumbs Up

Glad someone else noticed it Smile but whether or not you meant it in a bad way to bikes, they are a huge part of a lot of peoples lives, I for one would find life incredibly boring without my bike.

As for the knee down thing, I find that if you go about your business as per usual, you will get the urge to lean down at every opportunity so don't worry about it Thumbs Up

Dont worry knee down is fun. Safest way is go round a roundabout about 4 times, until your able to read what the bike is doing, then hang off a little and reach out with your knee, with your foot turned fully outwards to extend the knee as much as possible. Should just skim along nicely.

Then you'll be doing it on the road all the time Surprised There is much joy to be had, from chasing somebody down on a sharp right hander with your knee dragging and your head so low you can look at their bike's undertray Shocked Just watch you dont get your head (or knee) knocked off by oncoming cars Laughing

Agreed!

I taught myself on the VFR to get me knee down, never had a scary moment either Confused

It's a great feeling once you get it down just don't try it on every roundabout unless you know the tarmac.

There's a roundabout just down the road from me thats perfect, not much traffic, not to fast and the tarmacs very sticky, there's also a huge one in lowestoft thats much faster but you have to be careful of the traffic.

I'm the sort of rider who laughs my arse off at people hanging off their bikes like gibbons whilst 50 pencing it through corners. At least they're quick in a straight line though...

personally i cant stand the local roundabout surfers, sliding round at about 30 hanging off so far the bikes basically upright

i removed my strips on proper roads and i rekon thats the way to learn knee down, just find a nice smooth sweeper and lean right over, keep your head low and body to the side and your knee will naturally want to touch

good luck!

I Laughed like a gud'n the other day. I was on my way to Buckley tyres to get a tyre fitted. I had just left the A55 and approached the roundabout at the bottom of the sliproad when two bikes rounded the roundabout and left at the exit to my left.
The first bike just took the exit with ease, no need for a knee-scrape as they weren't going fast at all, maybe 25-30mph. The second bike shifted his ass from the right side (for the roundabout) to the left side (for the exit). The bikes 'lean' angle hardly warranted such an effort, but the rider probably thought "Rossi, eat your heart out. I'm the roundabout king! Aha ha ha ha ha haaaaaarrrgggghhh". What a dick head.
