What I don't get is why helmet manufacturers don't put some sort of soundproofing around the ear area (perhaps in the lining) to reduce the noise Confused

Think the noise is generated from the bottom of the helmet, which I suspect is difficult to insulate from the ear while still getting the helmet on.

All the best

Keith

Also from any vents that may be on the helmet and side pods.

Plus think of the exra cost that would be added to the price of new lids!

I am sorry, but there are some fools on here that think risking damaging their hearing is an OK thing to do.

The bike may sound good now but in a few years time you won't be able to hear anything. My mate mentioned above was the same and said things like "you can't hear whats going on around you" and "I am only pottering around town". Now he can't hear shit and wishes he could get rid of the constant ringing.

Once they are damaged they stay damaged, it's downhill from there once it starts!

i started to use them when i had my bandit, the exhaust was slightly loudish. i couldn't hear myself think without them, but it was great with them in, really quiet.
they cut out the background noise, wind noise etc. they make the ride so much more enjoyable.

we have to wear them all the time in work, due to noise legislation and health and safety. so free supply on hand. Wink
i would recommend everyone to use them ,wouldn't be without them now.

maybe the bike dealers should give some free samples away when a bike is bought/sold.

I feel this is the best place to ask (sorry to go slightly off topic).

My hearing isn't fantastic, and when I lay in bed at night when it's really quiet I can hear a very very feint (feint to the extent I don't know if I'm imagining it or not) ringing in my ears. Is this normal, or just me? I also get this feint ringing when I've had the earplugs in for a while when I've been on my bike, almost as if the noise has awakened the rining once it all goes really quiet again when I've stopped and still have the plugs in. Again, anyone else get this?
Also, for some reason my right ear canal seems a lot tighter than my left. Going to ring the doctors up tomorrow for an ear test methinks.

It's normal!

If it get's really loud then that is telling you that you may have some ear damage but in a quiet environment you will probably hear slight ringing!

I only follow speed limits and never use the motorway which means, according, to the HSE that I'm ok for at least 40 minutes which is what my normal commute works out to.

I wonder how many on here who are amazed that that there are people who are stupid enough to risk their earing don't consider exceeding the speed limit by 30mph+, stunting, filtering or dodgy overtaking as slightly dangerous?

The difference is that I don't tell each and every one of you how stupid you are, I leave you to find out for yourself.

I wear a Schuberth S1 helmet. No need to wear ear plugs as its so quiet all the way to the top of a ZZR1100`s limit. I had a medical to renew my HGV licence...no problems.

I got some from Halford's but can't tell you what they are like. I forget to put them in every time I ride.

I plan to use them all the time, my ears have been damaged enough by other things (infection/opperation, loud music, airoplane props).

Since I've had my RST lid which is a bit more noisy then my old lid,I've started using the cheap foam ones as I can get for free from my work.
I only really use them for a proper ride, my commute is only short and mostly at 30mph so I don't normally bother.

I always manage to lose one of them aswell Confused , so an expensive pair would be a bit of a waste of money.

And don’t forget that it’s important how you insert them. The plug has to fit nice and deep into the ear canal to make it worthwhile. I’m sure my early attempts at wearing them were a bit useless.

I bought a big box of 200 pairs of Earsoft FX from Protec, although I only wear them for longer/faster journeys. My commute is short and slow so not much point in hearing protection.

Did you know that they tried (and failed) to ban motorcyclists from wearing disposable earplugs in California, presumably in some twisted safety campaign?

There is evidence that proves that a significant number of manufacturers overrated ear protectors by a significant amount. Average claimed was 29dB attenuation but tests in the workplace suggested 13dB was more accurate.

13db is a substantial amount. Turns what would be safe for half an hour into what would be safe for 8 hours.

This is what a lot of people don't realise.

The dB scale is "Logrithmic".
For every extra 3dB you actually DOUBLE the noise volume.
So the difference between 13dB and 29dB is phenominal.

Have always worn plugs myself, not to say i haven't forgotten them now and again but do my best to get them in every time on the Buell - standing next to it with the engine running is bad enough let alone adding wind factor etc......

I lost the only pair I had on me while in work the other day so had to do 25mile trip with ears open to the elements & by the time I got home my ears were properly ringing!!! Not saying everyone will be affected to the same degree but my lugs were in agony!!

Kind of prompted me to arrange a date to remove & refit my exhaust system!! I'd never realised how much it popped & banged on the over run when I had my plugs in... I just though they were quiet little pops..... but no... they're not!!

Jeez, has there been some sort of evolutionary change over the last few years that I haven't heard about making everyone hyper sensitive,

guess thats the problem with being deaf, you don't hear about it.

After trying out quite a few different pairs of earplugs, I found I could only get a couple into my ears with them being comfortable once I had my helmet on.
As a result I now use the Motosafe plugs (Link), which have a filter in a silicon surround - meaning I can easily trim them so they are a perfect fit. My only concern is that they don't appear to block as much sound as the other plugs I tried, although apparently they block the correct frequencies to protect your hearing but still allow you to hear conversations etc.

My query is to anyone else who uses/has used these plugs - what did you think of them? Is the fact that they appear to block less sound a problem? I've been thinking of getting some custom made, would this be better?
