Which CBR600F for < ?2500?

Hi,

Decided on a CBR as a slightly sportier alternative to a ZZR/VFR.

I've seen a few ads on biketrader. I thought my money would get me a CBR600F-X ('99) /Just/.

But I've seen a 2001 CBRF with 11,000 miles going for £2550 on biketrader as well, with one owner.

What am I likely to get for the money? As I don't believe in bargains.

Performance have 4 in at the moment, ranging in age from '91 (cheapest at £1500) to '99 (most expensive at £2500).

They are always willing to haggle, especially if it's going to be a cash sale. Reckon you'd get at least £200 off the list price of all of them, probably more if you stick to your guns.

This one looks OK for the money........

Mileage isn't especially relevant if it's been looked after well! Best to go and have a look, give it a good going-over, ask if they have receipts for services and replacement parts etc.

Mind you bear in mind that these are the people I bought my Zeph off, who told me that they had been servicing and maintaining it for the previous owner so they knew it was in good order. I found out on Sat that it had the wrong size tyres on, BOTH wheels......... Some people will say anything for a sale! However, I was also told on Sat that the bike as a whole is in exceptionally good condition for its age and worth well above book price so it's swings and roundabouts really.........

The advert says good condition and doesn't mention the fact it has been dropped. The photo shows the damage so he could say he has been honest, but I would be wary. The scrape on the fairing, the scrape on the end of the brake lever, the missing bar end weight and the new exhaust suggest it has been dropped on the move.

All this doesn't necessarily mean it is a bad bike but the price for a damaged bike should be much lower than one that isn't. I think around £2000 would be more realistic for that bike.

It's obviously been dropped, but it's pretty noticeable from the pictures so I'd say it doesn't need mentioning in the ad. As people have said it's an easy way to get him to lower the price. You can get a pair of bar ends for £10 so don't worry. Check the right footpeg/rearset and check it's all sound, no wobbly footpeg etc. If he hasn't done anything with the peg there will probably be a scrape on the hero blob (not in the usual place from scraping it round corners, more in the centre of the blob). Have a check of the clip ons and forks, check that the drop hasn't broken/bent anything. Check the brake lever over and make sure there isn't a scuff at the end of the swing arm.

That's a spectacularly insignificant scrape, CBRs have a little bump there and you'll always scrape it if you do a 0mph drop.

IMO, 'good condition' means just that. Maybe without the scrape it would have been 'excellent condition'.

The best CBR i can recommend is called a ZX6R

Any 94-97 CBR6 is good value and a well rounded bike for all seasons and all abilities.

I had a test ride on a 97 CBR and it was very neutral handling. It was on ebay for 1700.

Thoroughly good bikes mind, although for that price, you can get a ZX6R G

Any spanner can work on the two bikes. ZX6rs are known for warped disks, hondas are known for dodgy reg/recs. Regardless to say most of the engines are bulletproof and can see 100,000 miles of use if well maintained. Honda's are known to be rattly on the old camchain at 20k miles from what i've been told. Either way, both bikes are reliable, although the older kwaks, like mine for example suffer from carb icing. Kwaks are bargains and well undervalued.
