Right, here's the background...

BCF's new rookie bike racer is once again going to be interviewed by his local BBC radio and web people on Thursday for the sports programme on Friday (you can listen over the web if you're interested/want a laugh etc).

However, this week, there's a twist. The guy doing the programme will also be talking to multiple World Superbike Champion Carl Foggarty and is putting Luke on at the same time, a kind of one racer at the end of his career and another just starting type thing.

So, what Luke needs to know is (seeing as how he can't think of what to say at present! Laughing ) what question should he ask Foggy if he ges the chance for one particular shot?

I open the floor to piss takes, serious questions and general tomfoolery etc etc.

How about: "I've read your autobiography, and how come you can do so well in racing and know absolutely nothing about bikes?".

or slightly more seriously "How much did your father help you when you started racing? Do you think the fact he was a racer gave you an advantage?".

How about:

"How important do you think having a hugely overinflated ego and a frankly disturbing stare are to winning world championships?"

or

"How come you didn't move to MotoGP and whup Rossi's ass? Was it because you're actually shit?"

Question

4 world championships and a 7 year unbeaten record at the isle of man, hardly shit?

Ok he didn't go to MotoGP, but why not stay where your going to win. I'm don't really know much of foggy, kind of before my time, only that he must have been damn, and anyway if my mums heard of him......

<pedant mode>

a) Because MotoGP didn't exist when Foggy was racing.
b) Rossi was not racing in the class that MotoGP replaced, when Foggy was racing.

GP500's and it did exist it just has a different name. Rossi was winning his championship in 250GP's the last year of Fogarty's superbike reign. If he'd have gone to GP500, rossi would have too and they'd have been pitted against one another. So Ner. Razz

Well, if you mean 500s then say 500s as most people would agree that 990cc four strokes are quite different from 500cc two strokes... a bit more than just a name.

You mean if Foggy hasn't crashed, injured himself and subsequently retired in that same season? So, my points still stand. And, ner! Razz

No I disagree. The very first 990cc four strokes came out a couple of years after foggy retired, however there were still plenty of 500cc two strokes in the field when they were there. The name change was purely because not all of the bikes were 500cc, so GP 500 didn't make sense any more. However 500cc two strokes were only phased out a couple of years later. Plus rossi won a championship on that yellow corona NSR500 with the wide mouth intake if you recall, which would have been the year that Foggy retired if I recall correctly.

Foggy, what on earth made you choose such a disgusting shade of not-quite blue-green for your team colours?

The rules were changed to allow 990cc four strokes and 500cc two strokes. The fact that people still ran the 500cc bikes was down to lack of development on the larger bikes (budgets etc). 500cc bikes were not phased out - they just weren't competitive / cost effective. Once the teams had all developed the 990cc bikes then the two strokes naturally died a death.

Rossi first competed in 500cc in 2000 - the year after Foggy retired, having crashed and injured himself in 1999. Rossi won his first 500cc title in 2001 and the 500cc Championship continued until 2002 when it became MotoGP.

So, again, both my points still stand! Razz

So why not ask Foggy if he would have liked to have raced Rossi, and if so what bikes would he most like them to both ride... 500s or 990s Wink

I dunno, everyone's getting at me for my tongue in cheek comments when my one serious comment has been ignored! Rolling Eyes

Foggy could have raced again had he wanted, and could have gone to GP500 way before he retired. But he didn't.

Anyway I still think you should ask about his dad being a racer.

Also @ Silver, in the MotoGP rules now it does say you can't use a 500cc 2t, so therefore they were phased out by dorna. However my expression 'phased out' could mean by the teams could it not?

I understand you have to stamp your authority as the fountain of all racing knowledge but its getting silly now! Wink

He tried riding again. He was in pain and miles off the pace. So he could have raced, but it wasn't really an option.

Yep, just that we were taking about at that period in time and not the current set of rules.

Now you're just being paranoid! It's a healthy debate and my knowledge is nowhere near fountain levels... Wink
