Hey,

I would like to complete a course on motorcycle maintenance, you know a part time one. Problem is I cant find one at the local universities (Thames Valley Uni etc)

can anyone tell me where I could find what im looking for locally or otherwise?

There aren't all that many around, unfortunately. I help out at one in London on Wednesday evenings (although it's the Easter break at the moment).

If you can get to Hackney Community College in London for 18.30 on Wednesdays then you're welcome to join us.

what kind of course is it? a BTEC or just a course?

It's a one term introduction to basic motorcycle maintenance, and covers tyres, chains & sprockets, batteries & basic electrics, engine types, servicing, buying a used 'bike etc.

If you can bring your 'bike in then so much the better as the classes are mostly practical. IIRC you do get a certificate at the end of it, but it's not a qualification as such.

What would be the cost?

Be honest with me are there students in there thick as sh*t? Black as the night? Armed gangst*s? I hate those types to be honest.

We get all sorts - some with a bit of experience, some with none. Some clueless, others quite bright.

We've had bankers, chefs, students, nurses... you name it...

Fair enough, but whenever we've been doing some work, either the lecturer or I will double check to make sure it's safe. The last thing we want is someone coming to grief because of something they've done wrong that we haven't noticed.

Merton college do everything from evening classes to full wack qualifications.

I've done my Automotive Technician Accreditation and just finishing my Level 3 advance in motorcycle mechanics.

You seem to be missing out the more important part Toby the "Armed Gangsters" part.

Mix them all together and I wouldnt go near them!

Well I travel 35-40 miles to get there. Some travel about twice that to get to it, theres not many motorcycle places around like this one.

I highly recommend it, but they are a little short on lecturers atm, they seem to be hard to come across.

I've been chatting with a mate who's just done a welding course at TVU, and he reckons they've got a whole bike workshop.

I'm going to get in touch with them in the next few days and see if they'd be interested in running a bike course if there's enough interest

Klause yeah i heard it was pretty much the best in the UK but as a school kid i really dont have time at the moment to get there and back, am head to toe in exams and revision, plus ive only been biking for 2 weeks so im not that confident [b]yet[/b[!

If a college was to run an evening course nearby. I would quite happily help to teach people basic maintenance for bikes. I think the nearest college for me only does cars. But I'm sure people in the surrounding area would take up an evening course if there was one.
