I HATE IT!

Ive got Windows Vista, im running programmes which were supplied with Vista. So theres no excuse as to why they shouldnt work.

MSN (or windows Live messenger).
I get these stupid little "FF" looking icons next to the green man in the task bar. If I right click on any one of them I get a warning message. (See attachments).

And also, atleast 5 - 6 times a day, Firefox decides its "Stopped working" and needs to restart. Usually when im in the middle of writing a Message or a PM.

WTF

Are there any patches available to cure windows Vista?
or is it so shit, that its un-fixable?
And would a downgrade to XP be better?

I'm liking Vista, alot more than I expected.

"FF" is usually something to do with FFDshow, a directshow filter. What are you running?

As the mans sayss FF is to do with a codex, cant remember which one but it takes over your webcam and opens itself multiple times causing crashes.

You'll get FFDshow in a fair few packs, the release I use is part of the K-lite set. Can't say I've ever had any problems with it myself, certainly nothing inimical or involving the webcam.

Having said that, it could be a clash there. If you usually use a webcam with your messenger software then it would explain why the overlay is starting, can't see why you'd get multiple instances though Confused

**edit:

Meant to ask, which Firefox release? I know there were some problems with Forecast Fox and some of the flash handling under Vista. This was a bit ago though, no idea what's been fixed. Suffice to say I'm using fire fox under Vista to type this and haven't experienced any of the symptoms you've mentioned.

delete the stupid codec pack you've installed, you never need them anyway.

install VLC from here, it plays EVERYTHING! without the need for codec packs

Thumbs Up

Thats the problem with Vista, its too new so many programs and hardware wont want to work with it until the manufacturers release the necessary patch/drivers.

Its never going to run as smooth as your used too. Windows XP has had 7 years worth of patches, whereas Vista has had none.

Thats why im staying away from it for now. Letting other people get the problems first. Dance! Razz

FF FF FF FF is hex for 255.255.255.255, or it's the color code for black, or in some programs it will represent a null value.

No idea why it's showing up on your MSN live, but I honestly wouldn't install a new operating system until at least the first support pack was released. There's just too much interoperability they can't test thoroughly for in a test lab.

My parents have Vista on their new pc. I'm calling dell on monday asking them to take it back or send out a copy of xp, its extreamly slow and compleatly unuseable. Took 20mins to add a 1 page .doc attachment to an e-mail tonight! Took <20seconds to do the same thing on my mac.
Its a pile of pap and i wonder why MS would release something that apears not to be ready for the customer market.

It is almost ready for the consumer market, problem is, to run effectively it needs so much resources. I've heard figures of 2GB RAM needed as a bare minimum to run Vista well.

Why the hell would you run the most expensive version of Vista on that POS?
