I passed my DAS about 6 weeks ago, and I really want to learn how to corner properly. I bought Ride magazine today because they had an article about leaning. I understand all of it, but there's one bit I want to check:

When your body is in the correct position and you're about to go into the corner, you're supposed to nudge the handlebar with your inside arm - so if you're going into a right hand bend, you're supposed to nudge the steering slightly to the left? Then you straighten the steering up once you're leaning the correct amount, right?

I just want to check that's all correct if someone wouldn't mind letting me know if I'm right or wrong, that would be great! I'd rather not end up in a hedge!

It's called counter-steering, though I have tried it, it works and wouldn't recommend anyone who doesn't know their bike, or their own limits to try it, it could easily catch you out and have you sliding down the road if your not ready, but mainly, as long as your being observant to an extent, and not too stingy on the throttle, you should be fine when your ready.
HOW? - just go into the corner/bend and instead of gliding the handlebars around, just fend them to the opposing direction slightly, cos too much and you will be buried in the ground, you will also feel the bike going further down and be quite pleased with your progress, good luck Karma Thumbs Up

If you want to go right, push on the right handlebar.
If you want to go left, push on the left handlebar.

Everybody counter-steers, it doesn't matter if you're aware of it.
If you are aware of it, though, you can deal with hairy situations more easily, because you're less likely to lock up.

I think you're talking about counter-steering there mate. To be honest, most people counter-steer without realising.

If you're going into a right bend and you turn the handlebars to the left ever so slightly you will notice the bike dips into the corner and makes it easier to lean in.

Not sure what the term is but I wouldn't say "nudge" the bars as such, its just as if your just turning. I don't think it has a major effect on riding on the road, I'd say its more of a trackday thing in my opinion. I would intend to use it more consiously on a road full of twisties riding at my own limits rather than every corner on the road just pottering.

Thumbs Up

If you've ridden a bike around a bend before, you have counter-steered.

So, really, I just want to relax my arms and let it steer around, right?

Yup, just do it natural and let the bike do the work. I am sure Phil Read, Agostini and Hailwood never bothered about countersteering. Great riders just ride rather than reading magazines that tell them how to do what comes naturaly.

We're not talking about Hailwood though, we're talking about skills that can save your life on the road if you are consciously aware of them.

Understanding countersteering could mean you miss that car that's pulled out on you, or dodge that pothole you couldn't see... etc.

It's an important skill, do some reading and some offroad practice and it will benefit you.

You don't need to do any reading at all.
Go to an industrial estate or similar low-traffic road, get the bike up to about 20 (or 30 if you're feeling adventurous) and push on the right bar.
The bike will lean and you will begin to turn.
Push on the left bar.
The bike will lean in the opposite direction.

It's as simple as that. If you are aware of it, you are less likely to panic should you need to swerve and just tense up and grab a fistful of brake.

Don't you find it kind of ironic you've told him he doesn't need to read anything and then given him some instructions that require him to read?

There's a disused airfield about 20 miles away from me... I think I might take a trip down there in the next few days and have a bit of practise.

Thanks for the info!

Jesus Neutral

Just ride in a straight line on ANY quiet road and push the bar. You dont need to do a 30 minute trek to get a quiet road.

You're on a heavy lump of metal with two discs spinning at 30 (centrifugal force people). Its quite stable.

Christ i spend most of my time when im not hooning riding one handed.

Thats something to try, going steadily at 30 ish rest your left hand on the tank. Now push light with the right hand away from you.
Bike will gently veer right. Stop pushing Wink

There's a really good video about counter-steering on YouTube somewhere done by an American fella living in Thailand. Just go to YT and do a search.

It's by Mordeth13, but you won't find it on Youtube as he's been banned.
You can find it on livevideo here.

Just look at where you want to go and you should be able to get round a corner without thinking about it, assuming your speed is appropriate Wink

but as stated above it can get you out of a stick situation sometimes.

Agreed, 'nudge' is a bad word, you don't want to be nudging anything. You want to keep everything SMOOOOTH. The smoother your riding, the faster you'll be going.

I was really really bad at corners (not saying I'm good now! Razz ) because i was constantly thinking about it.
I corner alot better now (can stay in my lane and not go wide!)because i don't think about it, I just get on with it. The only time now I'm concious of cornering is when I'm going around a blind bend or doing those dreaded U turns Wink .

Shocked how did you manage to get your CBT certificate if you drifted into the oncoming lane whilst cornering?

I didn't do it all the time and i didn't go all the way into the other lane just a little over the white lines.
My instructor wasn't happy with it but I managed to stop doing it on my CBT.
On my bike the back tyre is different, so I wasn't as confident doing tight corners and over compensated by going wide.
Now, as I said, I just get on with it and stop being paranoid the tyres going to slip or something.
