OK, I am a beginner so any help will be much appreciated. (Hope this post is in the correct section!)

In May/August I will be getting my first 50cc bike after I take my CBT. So what are the rules and regulations on de-restricting the bike? Do I have to have an insurance by law? and what are the odds of being caught with a de-restricted bike?

What bikes are fastest and easiest to de-restrict? Any suggestions welcomed as I am a n00b!

Anyway.

If your 16 then it is illegal to derestrict your moped. Because it is no longer a moped. It could invalidate your insurance.
A moped is a motorcycle that has the following features:

maximum design speed not exceeding 50 kilometres per hour (km/h) (about 31 miles per hour (mph)

an engine capacity no greater than 50 cc

it can be moved by pedals, if the moped was first used before 1 September 1977

However, generally the police dont bother unless they catch you speeding!

Hiye mate! Do I HAVE to get an insurance by law or isit optional? Also are there any liquid cooled mopeds you could recomend?

Shocked
You are required by law to be insured to ride your moped.
Assuming your 16?
You must hold a signed provisional license
In addition to doing a CBT
There is not "an insurance" for a deristriced moped.

The insurance company will not insure you if you tell them your moped is deristriced because it is illegal, thus deristricting your moped will invalidate your insurance.

You must have at least 3rd party insurance which is usually the cheapest and just covers the cost of repairing whoever/whatever you hit in an accident.

The other options are third party fire and theft which is a bit more expensive but you also get paid out if the scoot is stolen. If you crash and damage your bike you have to pay for it fixing.

And there's fully comprehensive which is the most expensive and covers any damage to your bike, any damage to other people/property, fire and theft, and you'll sometimes get a courtesy bike to use while yours is being repaired.

If I do De-Restrict the moped what are the odds of me being caught. Becasue nearly all moped riders my age that I have spoken to have derestricted the bikes!

Well its kind of a lottery to be honest.

If you get pulled for something and you have an after market exhaust on your ped then they will be wondering if your bikes restricted or not.
Unless of course they catch you speeding.
The problem is they dont actually know who the age of rider, so unless they have good cause to stop you they are unlikely to find out.

So as long as im not running pedestrians over or doing drive by shootings I should be safe as long as I am not stopped by the police. And just to be extra safe i should be a extra perfect rider when a officer is in sight and in general I should be riding by the rules (apart from the opposite speed burst on pass overs etc!) Wink That clears things up thanks!

Even if you de-restrict and rebore your ped it still won't be very fast.
Anyway, it's not really the traffic police you need to worry about as they are unlikely to care.
You want to be worrying about when you crash (and you will) as if you crash into somebody else/somebody crashes into you then the insurance company will refuse to pay out and you will then face the wrath of Her Majesty Queeniepants.

Why bother? Do your CBT, ride a ped, wait a year, take your test, get a proper bike. No probs with legality (or lack thereof) and you won't look like a tosser.

The best hope you have is to keep your L plates on all the time, I know they suck. But you'll get less chance of getting pulled over. If you are lucky you might get mistaken for a 125 scooter.

But yeh don't do anything stupid you'll get away with it, I was followed by police on my moped when it was doing about 40, they didn't do anything, just passed me further down the road. (I didn't un restrict it by the way, it was just a crap scooter Razz)

Gilera Runner 50
Piaggio Zip SP
Piaggio NRG (be careful, some are a/c)
Aprilia SR (not ditech)
Gilera DNA

Dont bother with any others, The italian scoots are designed to be 'full power' then restricted, Japanese (yamaha = mbk, mbk = French) are ok but not designed to be 'full power', So are rather slow in comparison to the mentioned above.

If you must differ from those look at:

Yamaha Aerox/MBK Booster (L/C)
Piaggio Zip (A/C)
Piaggio Typhoon (A/C)
Gilera ICE (A/C)
Yamaha Slider/MBK Stunt (A/C)

...And pretty much dont condsider anything else Wink

Things to avoid:

Anything that sounds weird/far east/chinese (Boatian etc)
Peugeot's (pain in the ass to work on, generally crap IMO)
Honda's and Suzuki's (good at making big bikes though)

Are mopeds allowed on pass overs? Are they only banned from maotorways and Dual Carriage ways?

How much should I be looking to spend on a 2004/05 version of any of the above italian bikes? (Pre-Owned)

Moped can travel on dual carriageways...altho its not recommended. You cannot ride on a motorway.
As for the buying bikes i cant help

Just a quick sum up of what I have learnt today thanks to the help of you guys!

To Begin: 1) Get a Provisional License and get it signed
2) Activate the Provisional License by completing CBT
3) Get insured
4) Purchase a 50cc Moped and enjoy riding anywhere apart from the Motorway and stay away from Dual Carriage way if possible
5) Must keep L plate on the moped

De Restricting: 1) Will void your insurance
2) If done, ride extra safely and extra careful when you see a police!
3) Enjoy the occasional speed burst from traffic lights to the next traffic lights !!!
(I HAVE DECIDED THAT I WILL NOT RIDE ON SPEEDS EXCEEDING 30MPH IF I DERESTRICT MY BIKE APART FROM THE OCCASIONAL SPEED BURST!!)
