Travelling from Stoke on Trent to Milton Keynes today got me wondering on the chances of being done for speeding on the motorway. Only place I saw a camera was at the roadworks around junction 14 of the M6.

The average speed of the outside lane appears to be round 80-90mph for most people with a few cars easily hitting 100+.

To the best of my knowledge there appears to be very little monitoring of speed with the only people I know of being done were all stopped by marked / unmarked cars. I even looked at a speed camera database but couldn't many on motorways?

Has anyone been done by a camera or similar on the motorway? Where? How? What speed and what happened?

Speed cameras on motorways are rare and normally only at roadworks. Mobile cameras in vans on overhead bridges is something to look for. SPECS cameras are popping up though. Nottinghamshire have loads of the things. These are time over distance cameras but pretty useless for bikes.

Police patrols on motorways are low but you could be suprised at the amount of unmarked cars on patrol. I occasionaly get partnered up in the ANPR car and go on the motorway. This is an unmarked car and we often get overtaken by cars doing 80-95MPH and depending on the flow of traffic we will let it go. I personally would rather stop someone for an ANPR hit than someone speeding on a motorway.

My advice to anyone is keep it under a ton. Shocked

Hi

There seem to be more locally in Staffs now than ~4 years ago when there were next to none. However, how many of those are just parked up in their unit at Doxey is another question (regularly 4 marked police cars parked there, and fairly often an unmarked Skoda).

Have seen 2 radar traps over the years on the motorways, not really very common. And a few camera vans. At one time they claimed that they would not put Gatso cameras on motorways, but they seem to have got round this by using mobile one.

All the best

Keith

That does seem to be the general consensus of opinion - you are unlikely to get done by plod if you keep it sensible. As you said, the traffic does tend to flow at around 80 anyway.

In the car I tend to peg the cruise control at 99mph if the conditions are good and the traffic is light.

Passed an unmarked Volvo on the M6 toll at 95 and he didnt bat an eyelid. Thumbs Up

Two rules of thumb.

Go faster than most but slower than some.
Go with the flow of the traffic and don't dick about...

That tends to work.

Saw a patrol car parked up on a bridge just before some roadworks as I headed northbound on the M1 last week from London. Everyone slammed on and we were all doing less than 70 as we went under the bridge. In 15 years on the road I've seen fewer and fewer patrol cars, so I guess as long as you don't stand out from the crowd then the chances of getting pulled over are slim.

Most of the time you're OK at about 90.
Thats fast enough really unless its very quiet.
As said above - don't be the fastest thing and someone else will get stopped by the occasional unmarked car.

They didn't catch you as you managed to travel back in time before you started speeding and managed to stop yourself. Doing so caused you to create a massive paradox in the case that if you didn't speed then you wouldn't of been able to go back in time to stop yourself speeding therefore you could never stop yourself speeding to go back intime to stop yourself speeding.

Sep: If he'd been on a 98' R1 he coulda just opened it up and created an einstein-rosen bridge in space time and therefore dissappered in back to the future style Smile
