Take my lid off before fuel?! WTF!

Ive not yet (touch wood) been asked totake my helmet off when getting fuel.
I do get some 'dodgy' looks how ever from the till person lol.
But other day did really pee me off.
Walked into sainsburys to buy some baccy. How ever this guy put the tobbaco on the counter - THEN asked to see my face.
I asked why 'Because you might not be old enough'
Fair enough - But you gotta be 16 to ride a scooter - im 5'10ish meduim build so I dont look like a skinny little under 16 y/o
I just huffed threw my tank back,keys,gloves to the floor and took my time taking my helmet off. Wound me up a bit - women,hair and helmets dont go together

i get this alot in a jet petrol station in walthamstow east london also every tiem i buy petrol there i buy fags and although ive got a helmet and bike and a bank card they still seem to think im udnerage although i go there everyday so this means everyday when they tell me to take my helmet off they get the finger and an arguement whilst i provide my license

As convenient as it would be to leave my helmet on I always remove it when I enter shops, petrol stations, etc and have done so since day one of riding. I don't mind really.

I went to my local Esso on the bike once and despite removing my gloves, helmet and keys from the ignition to open the fuel flap they told me to get off my bike in a stern manner over the tannoy which was quite embarrassing. I usually get off my bike anyway so don't know why I didn't on this occasion. I've never gone back there since with either bike or car.

Doesn't really bother me. I do it out of habit now. If people are bothered about messing up there hair, maybe biking is the wrong pursuit for them, as helmets have to be worn by law. And i think those who listen to music through headphones, are risking there lives. If you have a powerful bike, the only music you should want to hear is the purr of the engine, and the burble of the exhaust.

slight lean on the theme i agree if they want you to remove your lid then make the place clean enough to put it down somewhere,

the question is these tw*ts in souped up little cars do they have to take their hoodies off as well. personally i think looking at some spotty little oik who thinks they are a man is worse than a bloke on a bike.

A few months ago my local Asda put up a sign saying bikers had to remove lids before filling. I rode out of the station and filled up next door. I went back with the car and put the nozzle in the tank but before putting fuel in I pretended to notice the sign about bikes. Walked over to read it then put nozzle back and drove off without buying petrol

Got a few of my mates to do similar things and the sign disappeared the next week. Coincidence?

only one station I've come across had to take my lid off, at Texaco, heworth - york. I'd rather go to the ASDA station where you fill, no questions asked.

when i fill up i sit on bike at every station stop take gloves off fill up ride up to the window stop take lid off place the lid on the counter pay then on my way i only been asked to take my lid off once whilst fillin up so i just lifted my lid so it rests on top of my head and they was fine about it and i been riding for 4 years with any probs at fuel stations i only use roughly three different one in my 4 years of riding and they always serve with a smile thank you and have a safe journey i dont reaaly see whats the problem is yes its inconveint but also if ur in a rush and stop at a red light and gotta wait a inconveince no one i know complains abouts that what 3 mins max outta ya time gonna do havin to take gloves undo d rings take lid off ear plugs earphones most old riders out there would say that in their day al they had was helmet and gloves i may ride a 125 but prefer to get a head drillin from the engine noise and traffics to music riding my bike even in winter i just use suitable clothing gloves and lid and if the engine noise does my head in i know its time for 10 mins break thats it

when i fill up i always reset my trip meter and take my gloves off and kick my side stand down, i hardly ever get asked to take my lid off, and when i do get asked i dont, i just sit there and wait for them to turn the pump on, ive waited 15 mins before lol

I decided to test this lid off before fuel thing.

Filled up in Tesco with the lid on, went to pay and this is what happened......


I walked through the door, instantly the CCTV focused on me. It followed me round to the emergency 2-stroke. I swear I could hear the SAS cocking their semi-automatics in the distance, or it could have just been fellow motorists returning the pumps to their rightful place.

I gingerly approached the desk, placed the 2-stroke on the counter and in an assertive voice said "and pump 8 please". I was faced with "anything else love" as a reply.

"20 Lambert please" I said.

The transaction took place and I went on my way.

To get over the helmet problem when you fill your car up take a petrol container, then fill your bike up at home. Makes life a lot easier.

But then that's Xtra weight, dangerous and inconvenient, any one got a inky about it NOT being the law to take you lid off, I'm going to 'show' it to the daft 'ol cow at my nearest garage who insists it's illegal to not take my lid off in the shop, I didn't mind, until she started in a shop full , saying take it off, it's illegal..... Arguing didn't prevail at the time, I just paid and fvcked off, but I want to 'show' her the facts on it

Unless it is expressly stipulated as a condition of sale at the time you fill up, pump-jockeys can't insist on you removing your lid. Provided you offer payment for your purchase - make sure you do it in full view of their cameras - if they still refuse to serve you, tell them that because they refused payment you'd be delighted to accept the fuel as a free gift.

They just out up sign saying "motorcyclists please take helmets off before entering shop" but it doesn't say "otherwise you won't be served".
