Imaginatively dubbed the RIDER, it’ll come in two flavours. The RIDER Europe offers door to door directions Euro-wide, while a regional version comes pre-loaded with maps for the UK and Ireland.

Clever touches, like a four-button navigation system mean it’s a cinch to use, even wearing biker gloves. There’s a new Cardo scala-rider Bluetooth headset included too, making the unit respond to spoken instructions.

The headset’s a noise-cancelling affair, and also doubles as a mobile headset so you can keep taking calls on the road.

On sale in May, the RIDER will set you back £300 to £400, depending on which map package you choose.

I have just had a look on TomToms website link here and to be honest I can't see much difference apart from a more secure RAM mount and a better ear piece.

It still has all the usual features as the old one and if there is something new on it I bet the firmware could be updated on the old one.

What do you reckon?

the old one is updateable with firmware updates...same as all the models. you get them free when available through TomTom HOME.

Would be good if you could get the Ram mount seperately then to replace the old one - almost lost my rider the other day on a pot hole.

I bet the rest of it is the same as the other one as you can update them via Tomtom Home.

intresting though:

Adapts instantly to car use: just fit the RIDER car mounting kit with speaker on the windscreen of the car, switch on and you’re away.

So a new holder with a built in speak - wonder if that works with the 1st ones?

you can get a ram mount for the original.

from here
you'll also need a suitable bar mount which they also do.

the original rider had an optional car kit as well.

I always wear ear plugs.

Plus I can let my passenger, put in details in the car so I keep my concentration.

Not too convinced its a good idea on the bike.

Also what would it be like with the sun behind you, shining on to the screen?

i think the idea is that theyre addressing issues with their V1 to try to get riders that dont have a gps one to buy one

i doubt they expect riders with the V1 to go out and buy a V2 just because theyre releasing it

I have a tomtom rider and i think its fantastic to be honest. Went all around France with it the other month not one hiccup. The previous year I had a pda gps that bugger crashed every 20 miles. So compared to that its fantastic

I've had a tomtom rider for quite a while too and my only problems were the mounting system fitting on and the headset is malfunctioning now, its battery runs out way too fast.

I must admit my PDA GPS dose crash alot and takes ages to get a lock!

Also how do you fix the Rider to a Sportsbike like the R1? All the pics ive seen, they have it on lowriders and big bikes with handlebars!

My mate has seen a mounting plate that you attach to the petrol cap. Can't tell you how it works.

It looks to me like the RAM mounting still uses the original cradle for the TomTom - can anyone confirm? My original cradle was replaced twice by Halfords before I got one that worked and now that has failed (doesn't charge on the bike any more) after about 6 months. Halfords of course now say that I have to send it back to TomTom for repair. When I emailed TomTom to say that as the design was clearly a problem, I wanted a refund rather than a repair, they responded saying that they don't issue refunds and I have to go to the retail supplier (ie Halfords!) - so I'm stuck in a loop at the moment with a device that doesn't work correctly. I'm happy with the device itself and if I can resolve the charging issue would happily continue to use - anyone got any ideas?

if you want to keep the rider then contact tomtom and ask them for a replacement mount.

if you want your money back then go back to halfords and demand it.

simple really.
