In the past, when I've needed parts for a car on the cheap I've popped down to a scrapyard with a set of spanners and pulled bits off the high-milers and failed projects that litter the place. Several happy weekend afternoons have been spent in Looms in Derby dismantling BMWs and Volvos.

So... do similar places exist for bikes? It seems to me that when a car gets to a certain age and state you can't give it away, whereas all bikes seem to have at least a nominal value. Is there such a thing as a bike scrapyard and where might I find one? I wouldn't feel comfortable pulling bits off a written-off bike, but one that had simply become uneconomical to keep on the road might yield some useful bits.

There are loads of bike breakers about, just pick up the yellow pages.

If you get lucky you might find a place you can wonder round and look at everything they have. Thumbs Up Laughing

https://bike-breakers.info/ is the best place to start, you can put in the details of what you want and the breakers will actually e-mail you to let you know if they have it. I've used this site a number of times and you get loads of responses.

I've used Hemel Bike breakers a few times, but there only small and have limited stock. But the people who work there are really good and helpful.

Middle pages of MCN are full of adverts for bike breakers. It's about the only thing it's good for other than lining the dog kennels.

Derby does not have any bike breakers now, i used to run the last good one about 8 years ago (B'stard bike breakers).
Only ones left now are out side derby, pit stop in ripley and project bike in eastwood, both aint much cop and over priced in my opinion but if you need bits and they have them.............

Most of the bike breakers I've been to in the North West won't let you take the bits off the bike. They want you to know the exact bit you want and they will get it and you are not allowed to rummage through things unless it is tyres.

When I wa sin Herts, I used to use M1 Breakers, they are just outside Luton. I see you're not that far from me. It would mean a trip round the M25 then a battle with the road works. But if it was a for a heavy part, it may be worth it.

Have heard some very dodgy things about Pit Stop. It's quite a small place anyway though so the odds of getting what you want are pretty slim.

There's one near me (paul odd's r6 visited there) it's where the stolen bikes go before they're crushed.. you're not allowed to take or buy anything. Though you are from the cars.

next to his scruffy r6 was an identical tidy one.... yep going to be crushed and the guy wouldnt let me swap the panels...

makes me sick

there were loads of new bikes, stolen from a dealer, unregistered going for the crush too Crying or Very sad such a waste

Heh - cheers all.

If I improved my mechanical skills considerably I might reach the giddy heights of "mediocre" - so I really don't mind if it's not me personally pulling bits off the bike. If a pro does it then there's a lot more chance if it coming off in one piece and being in a fit state to go back on again.

Reason I ask really is because I'm fed up of people selling second-hand, tired old bits on Ebay at rip-off prices and then adding £25 postage on for something tiny like a brake lever. My experience with cars has always been popping down to the scrappy with £20 and leaving with most of a Volvo 240 and enough change for a burger from the van outside.
