How will it be backed up?
Do you want disk redundancy?
Presume running IIS then migrating to Tomcat?
Rackmounted? If so, how many U-high, have you plenty of rack space?
How many Power supplies?
Part of a SAN? Need fibre card?
How many network cards? Teaming/Fault tolerance etc? 100mb or 1000mb LAN?
Warranty? 4 hours/8 hours/Next working day etc?
What is your budget?

So many options!

Start with the Dell 2950 and work from there. I've had hundreds of Dell servers, and now manage a few hundred HP servers. Dell win hands down for build quality, rack mount kits and reliability.

I've had to replace a fair few parts on Dell servers over the years, and I'd say 90% of it was all hard drives (which isn't a Dell component anyway). Can't say much for the 1950 but the 1650, 1750 and 1850 were all great 1U servers - ideal for print servers etc.

One thing I would consider carefully is virtualisation. Going for a better server would allow you to run several virtual servers from within it.

https://www.vmware.com/download/server/ VMWare server (for Windows) is a free tool from VMWare and is pretty robust.

https://www.vmware.com/products/vi/esx/ is an enterprise product and is it's own OS. Awesome kit.

https://www.vmware.com/products/converter/ Converter allows you to convert existing servers to virtual boxes, ideal for redundancy or retiring old hardware. (Also free)

My advice, buy a bigger server and do more with it.

I actually run VMware servers for production and development, and you can run all the desktop OS's too. Great if you need some Win95 gaming goodness. Thumbs Up

I agree with m99dws. We've just started to play with ESX Server. It seems to be the way everyone is going. Cough up a bit more ££ and get a better server!

I went to the VMWare roadshow today in Wellington, and all I got was a lousy bag, pen, paper and some postit notes!
Roll on the McAfee one in a few weeks cos it's a free USB hub Laughing

One of the speakers there today runs 3 dual core servers with 4 CPU's stacked on another 4, with 32Gb RAM and massive SAN. They have virtualised about 90% of there servers.

LH, how are you configuring ESX? There is a quick way, and a best practice way, so let me know if you need any help.
