well, after 4 years it's time to upgrade this piece of junk Laughing

I haven't got a clue what to do, or where to start so....

PC is mainly used for doing a lot of calculations (it'll be cracking password hash's) and it'll be used for Gaming but not all the time.

currently it's an AMD 2000xp (1.6gz overclocked AFAIK) with an Nvidia 5700

i've chosen these

https://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2VsZWN0X3Byb2R1Y3Rfb3ZlcnZpZXc=&product_uid=112704

https://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2VsZWN0X3Byb2R1Y3Rfb3ZlcnZpZXc=&product_uid=113951

will that be a good combo? what else will i need to buy? heatsink, cpu fan? new ram?

I know i've got 1gb DDR ram in this one already but I dont know the type, hz whatever.

anyhelp required.

PS i'll probably read up on overclocking it properly too once all setup.

PPS the PC will be left on none stop, 24hrs a day as it's always downloading.

Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I have that CPU, and it's great. You'll be needing new RAM though, of the DDR2 type. Since that's the 'Retail' version of the CPU, it comes with a heatsink and fan, although if you're planning on overclocking, you'll need a better one.

Avoid Dell PCs, they're a pain in the arse if you ever want to upgrade them.

Err how? I've upgraded both RAM and Graphics Cards, easier than I have with any other PC?

They tend to use their own format mobos and PSUs, I believe.

So, you've never used one, let alone looked inside one and have decided to listen to the internet mob.

Believe me, they are easy to upgrade. Plus i'm a n00b.

check the configurations of the Motherboard to see if it allows overclocking. ( look at some people user comments)

Youll need to spend out 20-30 quid on heatsink etc etc for the cooling as the standard cooling it comes will not do.

My advice is connect it as default and look at the performance, there is a good chance you will not need to O/C , but if you do then you can do that later. Its not really mandatory for a chip like that.

DDR2 PC2-5300 is a good ram, but the more you have then go for the higher models then 5300, it looks like yo9uve got 2 slots free for RAM so make sure you get 2x1gig DDR2.

as i said before, buy the basics, and test performance, if you need more, then get a better cooling and have some real fun.

Thanks
Jake

you will need ddr2 ram. normal ddr will not fit the ram slots.

In the mother board book that comes with the mo board it gives you a list of reccomended ram, ie ones that will run at 800 mhz, and 667 mhz and 533 mhz ,now i have just done a pc with the Asus p5n-e sli board and have had shit loads of problems with the ram , i tried all top makes (corsair,Kingston, crucial) and it took ages to find some that would run good on the board so mayb wise to wait and order the exac model ram from the mo board manual.

Thumbs Up

To be honest, gaming and number-crunching are vastly different applications and the system requirements are often mutually exclusive. If you're serious about doing both, then you should consider getting separate machines. It doesn't have to be expensive and can actually work out cheaper.
For cracking and general bean-counting, I'd suggest you trawl ebay for a retired industrial rackmount system of some description. They're incredibly fault-tolerant and are more geared toward handling large calculations rather than for interactive use so you'd get better performance than with equivalent consumer-grade hardware.
Best of all, the resale value on business servers is incredibly low because your average PC user has absolutely no interest in them, so you can get a lot more machine for your money and it'll be better equipped to handle the rigours of hacking and cracking.
Another advantage is that you can install a proper OS, tune it up and have it run headless to save a few cpu cycles so you can keep your main machine by for all the pointy-clicky stuff.

Another thing: Avoid Dell like the plague. If you're a fan of names, then IBM and HP would be better bets (although HP opteron systems have more than their fair share of BIOS issues). Personally, I'd go for made-to-measure systems put together in 4U enclosures by a university or manufacturer of electrical test equipment. They tend to select (and sometimes build) the best components and you're much more likely to get a bargain.

Lastly, if you're planning for the machine to have a lot of uptime, then overclocking the cpu would be a very bad idea. I know it's fashionable, but it's almost always detrimental to the health of the system and isn't always beneficial to performance. Until you've run a profiler on your applications and diagnosed the bottleknecks in the system, you shouldn't even begin hardware tuning.

sorry dude, didnt have much time yesterday to come online, anyways, that MB will need ddr2, as the recommended ram.

as rob said towards the end as there is no serious benchmark to determine the cpu throughput prior, i would recommend testing before hand before overclocking.

im not writing overclocking off, ill be implementing a nice O/C myself but its just the c2d chip is rather impressive on its own.

Looks like a pretty good start you've got there. I got nearly the same thing, a 680i motherboard (identical performance to 975x) with an e6400 cpu and 2GB of DDR2 800.

My question is, what video card will you be using?

with graphics cards just becareful when looking at the specs, a G.C with a 256 mb ram may perform worse then a G.C with 128 ram.

Things like clock speed are more inportant factors and remember to compare these as well.

Enjoy your new system, you lucky git,

Thumbs Up Mr. Green

why oh why oh why does someone ALWAYS mention Dell????

They are shit build quality, cheap components built into a proprietary system that is useless to the rest of the world, their customer support is shite ( I could probably go on)

Oh I suppose they spend a shit load of cash on those fancy TV adverts so they must be good - eh eh wrong! They are about as good at building sturdy and fast systems as Microsoft are at producing bug free software - avoid at all costs!

Very Happy Very Happy

Now my rant is over Twisted Evil

I was gonna suggest the 7 series GPU but realised you had already ordered one, make sure you have a good solid mobo for everything to feed through and at least 2GB of ram - your graphics apps and number crunching will both thank you for it, I have 3Gb in my machine soon to be 4 as I allocate a portion as permenant supply for my virtual machines, when I go on machines with even 1gb installed I noticed a hell of a difference - remember RAM is pound for pound the BEST upgrade you can give your PC.

cheers

leigh Very Happy
