I've always wondered just how much better are Ducati 'S' or 'R' models over their basic versions. The basic versions are already expensive compared to Japanese equivalents.

It costs literally thousands to upgrade to a 'R' or 'S', so does this mean they become superior to other 1000cc bikes.

They're already superior. The price decides by how much...

Better?

"Better" suspension, "better" brakes, "better" engine in terms of crowd pulling big name brands and mega-money bling.

"Better" for the rider?

You'll have to be very skilled in riding to benefit from the 'upgrades'.

Differences between the 1098 and 1098s:

Front suspension:
1098: Showa 43mm with TiO fully adjustable upside-down fork
1098s: Öhlins 43mm fully adjustable upside-down fork with TiN

Rear suspension
1098: Progressive linkage with fully adjustable Showa monoshock.
1098s: Progressive linkage with fully adjustable Öhlins monoshock with top-out spring.

Rear wheel
1098: 5-spoke light alloy
1098s: 5-spoke forged light alloy

Weight
1098: 173 kg / 381lbs
1098s: 171 kg / 377 lbs

Instruments
1098: Ready for DDA system (see below)
1098s: DDA system enabled.

With the purchase of the Ducati Data Analyser (DDA), which includes PC software, a USB-ready data retrieval card and instructions, owners are ready to review and analyse the performance of the 1098 and its rider, and make comparisons between various channels of information. The DDA is available from Ducati Accessories, and is supplied as standard equipment on the 1098 S.

I know a lot of the cost is associated with a premium brand, and desirability and people will buy Ducati for how it feels and looks, but it would be even better if on top of that Ducati owners of the 'R' and 'S' models new they were getting a faster better handling bike too.

So in theory if a rider of suitable skill were to ride a Ducati normal, then a Ducati 'R' or 'S' and then a Japanese 1000, the lap times would clearly show the Ducati R as the quickest, followed by the Ducati S???

the R model usually comes with better suspention brakes etc, but also many other bits like Magnesium heads and stuff, if you compare a 749S to an R you will notice on the engine its gold on top, thats the magnesuim.
also has carbon fibre and other tart bits.

Not sure. The suspension should make the bike's performance more accessible - once setup ('better' suspension can be fiddly to get right due to its range of adjustment), but who can actually ride a standard one to its limits anyway - road or track (especially considering the average rider-type which would own such exotica).

The Jap thou would most likely be faster though...
