Just been playing with my NSR which top end blew up few weeks ago.

Decided to investigate why the wheel wont turn when its in gear, held the conrod and pulled upwards and the crank sort of spun halfway round, stopped and made a crunch and sort of a knock?

Im at my wits end with bikes, just said to scotty ill buy a 4 stroke next but when they fuck up its more expensive!!

Im going to go buy another moped, great fuel consumption, cheap to run and not as highly detonatable as a NSR

Well usually costs a bit more, but it really depends whats wrong with the engine in the first place.
As i think most 4 stroke bores are cast iron, so they tend to bbe cheap to get bored out. but valves arn't cheap, and doing the work on it isnt easy.

Seriously if, you do want to get rid of it I'd be interested, or have a working engine that I could be tempted to sell (half the rest of the bike is knackerd, so looking for new bits or to break it).

If the engine is mashed there's usually one's going at fairly reasonable price from breakers.

erm

Well, i cant work out whats going on, the crank only turns half a circle either way when its in gear, spins okay in neutral though.

Makes a crunchy sound, when i stick my fingers down that big dark hole i get remains of something stuck on my finger, probably bits of piston, barrel or ring.

Not sure what to do with it.

Its a sound bike it was Marks (MarsBars) on here.

Then it just packed up. Its had new back tyre, right front hanger and a few other bits done to it.

A engine would be another good option, but i dont even know if this one is fucked yet, ill have to get my mate round here or something.

250 lump smells nice, but then thats just asking for more problems, the NSR was never fast enough for me anyway

No point doing car lessons as i cant drive for shit, pedal bike?

i put the old top end back on, minus the cyliner head and piston rings and pressed the starter, turns over fine so it must be the way i spinning it.

To be honest, id rather buy a old moped as a runaround and pass my test, then get a bigger bike, ive just lost all interest in it, its cost me a fortune since ive had it and i havent worked for 8 months and i cant afford to keep repairing it.

Hi

If it is in gear then the engine will not turn over. If you try you will just turn the crank which will turn the clutch, which will turn the gearbox and thus try and turn the back wheel.

A new barrel should sort it out, or repairing the one you have now. Think you said you needed a new head which Col can probably help you with. It will cost some money, but probably a lot less than selling it and buying another bike (which may well turn out to have problems of its own).

Not sure if you saw the picture of my cylinder head keith its in my other post (was gonna post it here but coudnt it )

So far my shopping list is

Barrel
Piston
Piston Ring Set
Full Gasket Set
Small End Bearing
Spark Plug
Clutch Cable

All for £180.81 in VAT and postage

Just not sure about the head, whether to use it or buy a new one, is it safe to mix old and new parts?

Hi

That price isn't too bad.

I would reuse that head. As I said in the other thread it might not be ideal but I don't think in road use with a standard engine it will cause you any real problems.

You should only need a top end gakset set. Should save a small amount.

Just be careful and keep it all clean.

im gonna use it i think, im probably gonna keep the bike after the 2 hours i spent slaggin strokers and getting infuriated by it all!

Ive done my ped one a few times, just got to buy a torque wrench from somewhere now. I bet there a bugger to use!

Advice to anyone with a NSR when rebuilding top end - remove lower panels and the radiater, undo the top engine mounting bolt, and the front one behind the radiater,make sure front sprocket and chain is off and unclip the oil cable housing from the cable itself. The engine will drop forward and hang in the frame from the back by the remaining bolt, use a car jack to support it so it doesnt stretch a few of the remaining cables attached to it (oil ones etc)

Its a lot easier to work on this way.

well thats the plan on mine this thursday me thinks.

Sctually dropping the engine out and changing that parts that way.
As keith suggested its ok looking at it while its in the engine, but trying to put everything back can be a struggle.

Yeah, but if u let it sort of hang from the remaining bolt at the back and support it with a car jack , the front of the engine comes down by the front of the wheel area and the big space where the radiater was is now the space you have to remove the top end and that.

Im gonna have to go post the cheque for my parts!

Oh and my gudgeon pin, it has a small chip in it like the cylinder head had, about in the middle of the pin, shall i use it or replace it?

I just did

I got a gasket set for £5.60 in the end off some bloke on find it, saved me £21.60.

So for £160.37 i got piston, barrel and rings, gudgeon pin and small end bearing, spark plug and a clutch cable

Im pleased, i had fun laughing at my mate, who payed £329 just to have his rings and piston changed on his RS aprilia!!

Now to go and put the wheel back on!
